I bought an adapter USB-C to HDMI which said it is compatible with thunderbolt 3 port, and when I try to connect a monitor to it shows as USB 2.0 BILLBOARD device and doesn't work. I'll tried to install some drivers from hp site, but I'm not sure which one should be responsible for this functionality. Is that I should install to make it work. Adapter pluged to other devices works fine. Adapter also support Display Port Alt Mode it is:
I-Tec Brand, model: C31METALHDMI60HZ

I have the same problem. I started a topic about it but it seems that no HP people can solve it or even answer it.
This is a major issue for me since I've been dealing with it for a long time and THE ONLY alternative I was forced to do is to switch to Ubuntu, sinsce it works PERFECTLY there. There's something about HP and Windows software related that they aren't fixing.
If it helps you, I link here my thread to see if you have the exact same problem as me and many other people.
Hope we can fix it cause I want to use Windows but its imposible whit that unsolved issue.

Welcome to HP Community
I have gone through your Post and would like to help
I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...
HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook
-
Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
-
Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
-
Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
-
Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
-
Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.
Also ensure Windows is up to date.
Select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available
Keep me posted how it goes
