For years, I always used my VGA output to connect to an external monitor.  For my birthday, I got a portable monitor that connects with USB to USB.

The multiple display section of the display settings does not have "duplicate" in the dropdown option:

It IS successful to extend the display or to display on the 2nd monitor only.

I have updated the video driver to the most recent version.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated!

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

I see that your experiencing issue with the duplicate display when connected to USB.

I’d like additional information in order to troubleshoot.

When was the last time it worked fine?

Is this first time that you're trying to connect or duplicate the display?

While you respond to that, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

In the lower right of your screen (taskbar) related to your graphics on your computer (Nvidia, Intel, etc.).
Right-clicking on it you should be able to see "display settings", find an option for cloning your display, or dual-display, or something like that. Using that option should restore the dual-monitor display function.

Keep me posted for further assistance

Nothing actually happens when I right-click the icon in the system tray .  I was able to find a workaround to duplicate the display by disabling the graphics driver whenever I want to duplicate the display .
