HP Envy laptop
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My computer was functioning as normal this morning, and then suddenly the desktop and internet display turned to grayscale. I restarted and the initial logi in screen is in color, but the desktop and internet displays are in grayscale (after several restarts). Geek Squad said it was a hardware problem, and to bring the computer into the store, but I am not in the US until April. Help! I need the color to make graphics for my website.

Hey there! @katalan, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand you have display issues with your laptop.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?

Do you see the display when you boot into the BIOS?

Please provide the product number of your PC to assist you better.

As you mentioned the display changed to grayscale on your PC but the login screen looks colorful.

If the issue does not persist in BIOS try updating the graphics driver and BIOS on your PC.

Try performing a BIOS default on your PC and check if it helps.

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

Try the steps recommended below.

The simplest way to go from grayscale to full-color mode is to hit CTRL + Windows Key + C, which should work right away. If you hit the same key combination again, you'll go back to grayscale.

Windows 10 has a grayscale mode, because some visually impaired or color blind users have an easier time working with a different color scheme. In addition to grayscale, you can also choose among five other different filters, including "Inverted," "Grayscale Inverted" and "Protanopia," a filter for red-green color blindness.  To choose a color filter:

1. Type "color filter" into the Windows search box.

2. Click "Turn color filters on or off."

3. Toggle "Turn on color filters" to On.

4. Pick a filter.

Also, Uninstall the graphics driver from device manager and install the latest drivers and BIOS from the links below.

You can try updating the drivers on your PC using HP support assistant.

Refer this article to know more information about using HP support assistant.

If the issue still persists after trying out the steps try uninstalling the display drivers from device manager and install the drivers from HP recovery manager.
