I think the marketing material is flat-out wrong and I'm looking to get that confirmed. As I posted earlier:
The brochure for the product says: "Power your device or connect to an external display from just one USB-C™ port with 5 Gb/s signaling rate. And it's reversible, so you never have to worry about plugging in upside down."

i am upset because I bought an USB-C dock based on this knowledge and now I have a useless piece of equipment here.
