When I select "Extend these diplays", my laptop keeps the image and my external screen turns black. However, the toolbar at the bottom of the "black screen is visible and reacts to the commands coming from the laptop uning the mouse or Alt TAB...

Thank you for being a part of HP Forums.
It'll be an honor to guide you through the steps needed to identify your concern and/or address your query 😉
I recommend you lower the resolution of the screen and check if the extended display works, also, try to duplicate the screen and check if it works, or check the external display with another device to ensure its a working device.
Here's a step by step guide for all you need to know about connecting an external display to your notebook: Click here for the details

Hi Riddle Decipher 😉
Sorry but lowering the resolution does not help at all. I have no problem duplicating the display or selecting screen 1 only, or screen 2 only. Only extend does not work. My laptop screen (1) remains intact while the external display (HP27er) only shows the screen saver and the bottom toolbar 🙂

Thank you for responding!
I went through your product specifications, and you seem to have just one HDMI port, how exactly are you connecting the other monitor to your device?
If you are using USB Type-C, I must let you know that it wouldn't work unless you have a Thunderbolt compatible Type-C, I'm afraid your device doesn't have the thunderbolt feature, hence it wouldn't work via USB as it's only for fast charge and high-speed data transfer.
If I'm missing any vital information, please respond to this message and I'll check that out for you.

Riddle, I don't where you see more than one external monitor... I have only one, the HP 27er, conneted via HDMI.
I'm looking at it I type this reply.
I want to keep using this monitor as my principal display and having a different image on my laptop screen at the same time. i.e. I have a word document displayed on the laptop and I edit my web page on the 27er as if my laptop was a sheet of paper to read on my desk...
