I have a brand new 2017 Spectre 15" laptop hooked up to an external monitor with an HDMI cable. As soon as I stop being active on the computer, my monitor blinks black and then the screen reappears. It goes black for about 2 seconds, and at seemingly random times, it flicker back and fort. Does it all the time after a few minutes.
I have power settings as follow: Sreen going to sleep NERVER and computer going to sleep after 3 HOURS when plugged in. (it is plugged in).
I have seen and old similar topic but maybe not identical dated 2015 and not active.
Anybody experiencing this ?

Greetings @paralax,
Welcome to HP Forums and Thanks for the post.
I understand that you are facing an issue with your computer where the external display goes black randomly, is that right?
Kudos to you for trying to troubleshoot the issue on your own.
Not to worry, I will be glad to assist you.
Have you tried to update all the drivers using HP Support Assistant?
Have you tried the display and the HDMI cable on a different computer?
May I know the exact product number of your computer? Click here. Please do not share the serial number of your computer.
The issue you are facing could be an issue with the software settings, HDMI cable or the external display itself.
Recommend you run HP Support Assistant on your computer to make sure BIOS, chipset and graphics drivers are updated.
Please refer to this HP Article to know more about HPSA.
If the issue persists, try the HDMI cable and the monitor with a different computer and check.
Also, refer to this HP Article for other suggestions.
Keep me posted.

Did you resolve this? I have a very similar problem, though it has recently taken an unusual turn.
I updated the graphics drivers, which seemed to resolve the issue. However, as soon as I turn the WiFi on my laptop on, the screen flickers again (on the 2nd monitor, my TV).
So, things I have noticed:
- The 2nd monitor screen flicker only (now) occurs when the WiFi is switched on, even if I am playing a video from the hard drive.
- The screen flicker only seems to happen on newer TVs, possibly only on 4K sets. I say this because I never had any problems with my old Full HD TV, but I experienced the same problem on my new and my friend's 4K TVs.
At first I assumed maybe the graphics chip / drivers just couldn't keep up with 4K, but now that I have managed to get it to work fine when the WiFi is switched off, it seems to be a much more specific problem.
Why would switching the WiFi on interfere with the HDMI output to my TV? And why (possibly) would this only effect newer 4K TVs?
I also tried looking at the task manager while I was experiencing the flickers, and I didn't noticed any abnormal spikes in CPU, RAM or GPU.
