I do not recommend renaming as there is no telling which of the two are correct and from past experience the bios id is embedded in the bios code.

Also, your system is working:  Decided if you want to risk a BIOS upgrade like these users did

Hi Beemer,

My system isn't working - it's not outputting video at 5120 x 1440 - which means for me at least it's unusable - I'm willing to risk bricking it in the pursuit of a fix

(I have actually now tried the "renaming the BIOS" trick - it doesn't work -  I don't appear to be able to load ANY alternative BIOS - let alone the F.06 I would like to try rolling back to - following the HP instructions just doesn't work)

It was great - now it doesn't work - and the culprit appears to be the BIOS update - although this is really still yet to be determined

An engineer has been and gone - his conclusion was that it wasn't a hardware issue - and I've re-installed Windows so many times now, it really can't be that - so the BIOS is still looking like the favourite candidate for blame

I've now bought another laptop - because I can't not work - and so I'm personally out of pocket for a large sum of money

One of those life lessons I guess,  a shame as I've bought - and had good service from - numerous other HP devices

I've one last throw of the dice I think - I will re-contact the individual whom I first pestered which resulted in the engineers visit ...

Hi,

I haven't been able to test anything else, because the machine is with the user.

Perhaps later today I may try to perform some more tests on it.

Try to confirm if the generated/extracted files are the same with a MD5 hash

On the command line do the below command for each file and compare the output (I think it should be the same):

certUtil -hashfile FILEPATH MD5

On my Lenovo the "BIOS_Update.exe" file inside the "C:\SWSetup\SP151481" doesn't even run.

No errors, just nothing happening...

Ah - Jose - I'm sorry - I'm a sales rep, and while I know these things exist, my IT skills stop before we get to command line instructions and MD5 checksums

I also have a home built PC - various ASUS and Corsair parts - but similar Intel based chipset setup as the HP - like your Lenovo, it doesn't run the sp151481 program ... but my MSI laptop does ...

Yep, I wholeheartedly agree with you. I bought 2 of these business units for work colleagues. One of the units is doing the exact same thing as yours and the other works perfectly on a Samsung 34" ultra wide monitor. The one that works is still on f06, and the one that doesn't work anymore is on F07 now.

This is the sort of thing that the BBC Watchdog series likes to highlight. HP took our machine away and gave it back a month later unchanged. I'm still trying to get them to see sense here. At the very least take the machine back and give us back our money to buy a machine that works, probably not from HP!  I was also told that it's not a business unit, it's a student unit. That's not how it was advertised, it clearly states business, I'm totally bemused. Never again will I use HP for work laptops.

Hi Jonny, thanks for the reply - in some ways it's good to know I'm not alone in this

I appear to have found a resolution - I note that we can't send personal messages on the HP support site, but my first name is clear in my username, and I work at a company which makes water filters called AQUAPHOR - if only there was some professional Linking In type tool where we could maybe exchange a direct message ...

Thanks Tony.

Out of curiosity, can you provide the baseboard product id of the system with the F.06 bios?  You can use msinfo32 or that HP support assistant.

Does it match the F.07 baseboard?

Yes, both machine's baseboard product are 8BBA
Basedboard Versions are different though:
65.13 on the one that displays higher resolutions.
65.14 on the one that no longer supports higher resolutions.
Only other difference is in the Bios Version.

If you can access the HP_Tools folder you  should be able to copy the bios and signature file and put it on a USB flash then just copy it to the HP_Tools of the 65.14 system

you will have to unhide the HP partition by giving it a name such as the "F" drive using windows create disk tool.

wherever you see the bios and signature files on the 65.14 (they will be in more than one place), rename those files and substitute the ones from 65.13

Then do the WIN-B procedure to restore the bios.

I assume the 65.14 system is in warranty in case this does not work.
