We are having a lot of problems with our brand-new HP EliteBook 840 G9 laptops. Most of the time, it won't wake up from "sleep" mode. After we applied the BIOS update, it seemed to be better but we still randomly have issues where the laptop won't power on. The keyboard and power is light up, but nothing comes up on the screen. When this happens, we have to tell the user to "hard reset" the laptop by unplugging everything and then holding down the power button for 60 sec and letting it go, and waiting another 5 sec before turning the laptop on. We had a bunch of users having to do this for the past 3 months since we got this new model. What is wrong with this model!! How do we permanently fix this? Most laptops already have the latest HP/Windows drivers. Bios is at U71 Ver. 01.08.01. We really hate this new model!! So many issues!

Hello everyone
We have the same problem. Several users with HP EliteBook 840 G9 laptops faced with this issue. Moreover this model sometimes even doesn't turn on at all unless we reconnect battery, so we must open rear cover. It's impossible when user works remotely. When a laptop doesn't turn on it is not showing led indicator also, while a power cable is connected and even when we disconnect a battery from motherboard it even doesn't turn on with power cable. However if we reconnect a battery or return battery cable to motherboard it starts normally. Very strange situation. Bios is 70 Ver. 01.08.01 - 07/18/2023

We have a handful of these exact devices doing the same thing. Out of 100 devices of the same model, 5 are experiencing this issue where they won't power back on when turned off or go into sleep mode. The charging light turns on, but nothing happens on the device. Most will turn back on if you hold the power button for 30 seconds—some we have had to re-connect the battery which is not ideal for folk who are working remotely.
With one of these devices, we did see the date and time change to when the device was shut down.
We have upgraded to BIOS Version/Date HP U86 Ver. 01.09.02, 27/11/2023. (UK Date Format)

We just recently updated a few machines that are having this issue with the 1.09 Bios.. Waiting to see if it'll happen again. I have opened a ticket with HP where we ran diagnostics on 2 systems and sent them the logs. It's been 1.5 months, but still no update from them! Just an email saying it's still being reviewed. so frustrating!

Mine is a corporate laptop and it died yesterday morning. It was on at 11pm then at 6am it was off and won't turn on. Our IT folks haven't been able to figure out what's going on. All the mentioned "possible fixes" have been tried but it's deader than a door nail.
Any updates to what's going on with these ?
Seems like it's a bit more of an issue than just a few isolated laptops..

hi ive been looking after these issues for a while now, and have found the answer to every problem on the g9, first , if they wont power up \ remove the back slip the battery connection out for 5 mins while battery is off and no mains power press the on button to drain the system, replace the power ribbon in the slot bieng careful to connect correctly, replace the case and the next time you power up it should come to life,
The c-usb slots losing the connection , visit the hp website, install the latest bios, (yes ive proved this works everytime).
on installation it will fail, dont panic, let the laptop regen , lights on caps lock and power button fade in and out, keep trying to power up the laptop, and after 5 mins it will launch into its bios recovery mode and come back with everything working again, HARSH BUT TRUE, sometimes you get away with just re doing the thunderbolt drivers, g5 etc, if not do the above,
I look after a whole site of these things, if i can be of any help, ask, INFORMATION IS MEANT TO BE SHARED.

So let me try to clarify what you're recommending:
1. First you'd try re-installing Thunderbolt drivers and G5 dock drivers? if you can power it up?
2. Remove the battery connector for 5 minutes and while it's removed, press the power button for long enough to drain the system - I assume about 20 to 30 seconds.
3. Replace the battery connector and rear cover.
4. Install the latest BIOS even if you're already at the latest BIOS? BIOS install will fail and go into recovery, but will recover?
Just fyi, I believe HP recommended when a laptop cannot be powered on, press the F6+Power for 20 to 30 seconds to reset, then wait 5 seconds and then try to power on. This often seems to work but not really a permanent solution. Why is it happening at all? Sometimes users report that if they just disconnect the laptop from the G5 dock and let it sit for an hour, then replug it, they are able to power on again. Also one can try disconnecting all cords and power from the G5 dock and holding the dock's power button for 30-60 seconds, then replugging everything and then power on the laptop.
This power issue and external monitors connected thru the G5 dock randomly blanking out are two problems we've been experiencing on 640 G9's and 840 G9's. Updating all drivers through HP Support Assistant and/or HP Imaging Assistant have not solved these issues. HP is analyzing the diagnostics from one laptop currently - IDR logs.

We have run into a similar issue with the HP Elitebook 840 G9, except it tends to effect one usb C port at first. After while the notebook will stop turning on. On all of them HP ended up replacing the Motherboard.
