This is on an HP Pavilion 17 running Windows 8. I've been using my built-in webcam for years with Skype and Zoom, but all of a sudden my computer isn't recognizing it at all. It shows up under the Device Manager as HP Truevision HD with the yellow triangle exclamation point beside it. Under device status, it says "Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device...(Code 52)." The two driver files listed are under system32 as ksthunk.sys and usbvideo.sys and the ksthunk has what looks like a little certificate icon beside it, while usbvideo does not. I tried updating the drivers, but it says it is up to date. I've uninstalled, restarted the computer, but get the same result. I saw another post similar to this and I already have CyberLink YouCam installed, and it also tells me that I don't have a webcam installed. The button to roll back the driver is not available. I've also tried the FixIt tool but it didn't recognize it as an issue. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Is there a way to download those drivers so that the digital signature is verified maybe?

Hello!
I did not have any accidents or spill anything on the laptop and other USB devices were all working fine.
I had tried to uninstall/reinstall, as well as update the drivers, but neither fixed the problem. I got the same error code after it reinstalled, and when I tried to update the drivers, it just said that the drivers were up to date.
My hunch was that I just needed to replace the usbvideo.sys which was the one that couldn't be verified. I managed to do this by going into the C:/Windows/WindowSxS folder and searching for usbvideo.sys. Then I just copied it, and replaced the one in C:/Windows/System32/Drivers, restarted my computer, and it finally worked!
Thanks for your help! 🙂

Thank you for posting on HP Forums,
Riddle_Decipher is at your service.
As I Understand you've received the error - "Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)", and you are unable to rollback your webcam drivers,
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
Did you have any accidents with the device lately, such as dropping it or spilling liquid on it?
Are you able to connect and work on other USB devices?
What is the product number of your device? Use this link to find it: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824
(Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).
While you respond to that, here're a few things that should help:
To resolve this issue, reinstall the original HP Webcam-101 or Microsoft USB Video Device driver.
-
In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.
-
Double-click Imaging Devices to expand the list of webcam drivers.
-
If the HP Webcam-101 or Microsoft USB Video Device is listed, right-click the driver and select Update Driver Software and follow the on-screen instructions.
-
Restart your computer, and open your webcam software to see if the problem is resolved.
If the problem persists, use Microsoft System Restore to go back to a time when the webcam was working properly.
Click here to troubleshoot and resolve your concern.
Let me know how that pans out
I hope you have a good day ahead,
And Feel free to ask any other queries as well,
Considering, this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help.
