Hi @Bjgossett,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If a keyboard image appears on the screen during startup or restart, it's likely the On-Screen Keyboard (OSK) or Touch Keyboard being triggered due to accessibility or tablet mode settings.

Here’s how to stop that from happening:

Step 1: Disable On-Screen Keyboard at Startup

Option A – Use Ease of Access Settings

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to Accessibility > Keyboard (or search for "On-Screen Keyboard").
  3. Turn off the toggle for the On-screen keyboard.

Option B – Check Sign-in Options

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
  2. Scroll down and look for “Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device” – try turning this off to prevent reloading accessibility features.

Step 2: Disable from Ease of Access Center (Control Panel)

  1. Open Control Panel (Win + R → type control → Enter).
  2. Go to Ease of Access Center.
  3. Click “Use the computer without a mouse or keyboard.”
  4. Uncheck “Use On-Screen Keyboard”.
  5. Click Apply > OK.

Step 3: Disable Touch Keyboard Service (if not needed)

Only do this if you're not using tablet mode or don’t need touchscreen keyboard support.

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Scroll down to Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service.
  3. Right-click → Properties.
  4. Set Startup type to Disabled.
  5. Click Stop, then OK.

Step 4: Check Tablet Mode Settings

  1. Go to Settings > System > Tablet.
  2. Set “When I sign in” to Never use tablet mode or Ask me before switching.
  3. Make sure you’re in Desktop mode at all times (especially if you don’t have a touch display or 2-in-1 device).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
