Hi @Bjgossett,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
If a keyboard image appears on the screen during startup or restart, it's likely the On-Screen Keyboard (OSK) or Touch Keyboard being triggered due to accessibility or tablet mode settings.
Here’s how to stop that from happening:
Step 1: Disable On-Screen Keyboard at Startup
Option A – Use Ease of Access Settings
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Accessibility > Keyboard (or search for "On-Screen Keyboard").
- Turn off the toggle for the On-screen keyboard.
Option B – Check Sign-in Options
- Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Scroll down and look for “Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device” – try turning this off to prevent reloading accessibility features.
Step 2: Disable from Ease of Access Center (Control Panel)
- Open Control Panel (Win + R → type control → Enter).
- Go to Ease of Access Center.
- Click “Use the computer without a mouse or keyboard.”
- Uncheck “Use On-Screen Keyboard”.
- Click Apply > OK.
Step 3: Disable Touch Keyboard Service (if not needed)
Only do this if you're not using tablet mode or don’t need touchscreen keyboard support.
- Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Scroll down to Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service.
- Right-click → Properties.
- Set Startup type to Disabled.
- Click Stop, then OK.
Step 4: Check Tablet Mode Settings
- Go to Settings > System > Tablet.
- Set “When I sign in” to Never use tablet mode or Ask me before switching.
- Make sure you’re in Desktop mode at all times (especially if you don’t have a touch display or 2-in-1 device).
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
