Hi @Di_vine_12,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like your HP Pavilion dv5 is experiencing a frustrating issue where the screen turns off while the laptop remains powered on.

This could be caused by a variety of factors, such as hardware malfunctions, driver issues, or power settings.

Here are some steps to help you troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

Check Power Settings:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options and ensure the settings for "Turn off the display" and "Sleep" are configured appropriately. Set them to "Never" temporarily to see if the issue persists.

Update Graphics Drivers:

  • Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause display issues. Visit the HP Support website or your GPU manufacturer's website (NVIDIA or AMD) to download and install the latest drivers.

Inspect the Display Cable:

  • If you're comfortable opening the laptop, check the internal display cable for any loose connections or damage. A faulty cable can cause the screen to turn off intermittently.

Test with an External Monitor:

  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor to determine if the issue is with the screen itself or the graphics hardware. If the external monitor works fine, the problem might be with the laptop's display.

Run Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly to access the HP Hardware Diagnostics tool. Run a full system test to check for hardware issues.

Update BIOS:

  • Visit the HP Support website to check for BIOS updates for your laptop model. Updating the BIOS can sometimes resolve compatibility and hardware-related issues.

Check for Overheating:

  • Overheating can cause the screen to turn off as a protective measure. Ensure the laptop's vents are clean and free of dust. Consider using a cooling pad to improve airflow.

Reset the Laptop:

  • Perform a hard reset by turning off the laptop, unplugging it, and removing the battery (if removable). Hold the power button for 15 seconds, then reconnect the battery and power it on.

If this solution hits the spot, please come back and click "Accepted Solution" to help others find the answer. And if you'd like to say thanks, select "Yes" on the bottom left of the public post, as that would make our day! 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!
