Microsoft Windows 11

My Hp spectre screen is flickering. I tried external display but that too is flickering. I noticed this flickering increases in winters and comparatively decreases in winters. Also tapping or moving the screen flap has no effect on flickering frequency. (Flickering - entire screen flashes). Kindly help me to rectify this issue.

p.s. - could it be due to dry soldering issue of onboard graphics ?

HI @Raajit,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Screen flickering on your HP Spectre x360, especially if it occurs on both the internal and external displays, suggests a possible hardware issue. Here are some steps to diagnose and potentially fix the problem:

1. Check for Updates

  • Windows Update: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates. Install any available updates.
  • HP Support Assistant: If you can access it, run HP Support Assistant to check for driver updates, particularly for graphics.

2. Adjust Graphics Settings

  • Right-click on the desktop and select Display settings.
  • Scroll down to Advanced display settings and check the refresh rate. Make sure it’s set to the recommended rate.
  • You can also try lowering the resolution temporarily to see if that affects the flickering.

3. Check Power Settings

  • Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
  • Select your active plan and click on Change plan settings.
  • Click on Change advanced power settings and ensure the PCI Express setting for Link State Power Management is set to Off.

4. Run Hardware Diagnostics

  • HP laptops usually come with built-in diagnostics. Restart your laptop and press Esc or F2 to access the HP diagnostics menu.
  • Run the display and system diagnostics to check for hardware issues.

5. Test in Safe Mode

  • Boot your laptop into Safe Mode to see if the flickering persists. This can help identify if the issue is software-related.
  • To access Safe Mode, hold the Shift key while clicking Restart from the Start menu, then navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings and select Restart. Once it restarts, press 4 for Safe Mode.

6. Check Connections

  • If you’re comfortable, check the internal connections of the display. Sometimes, a loose connection can cause flickering.
  • If your laptop is under warranty, it’s best to contact HP support or visit an authorized service center.

7. Environmental Factors

  • Since you mentioned that flickering increases in winter, consider if there might be environmental factors like humidity or temperature affecting the hardware. Ensure the laptop is used in a stable environment.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
