W2071d
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am having trouble using a monitor with my new laptop, which has HDMI port, but no VGA port.  I have an HP  W2071d monitor with VGA input.  I bought a VGA/HDMI adapter, and am using VGA cables.

When I first tried this, there was a message on the monitor “input signal out of range – change settings to 1600x900.”   I changed the resolution settings to 1600x900.  At first, I was able to select the "Extend” view, which seems to work correctly, but none of the other “project” options worked.  Now the extend view does not even work.

In fact, if I unplug the VGA cable, and leave the adapter (no cable) in the HDMI slot of my laptop, the laptop screen stays blank, until I pull the adapter out of the slot

The adapter works when I use a projector with VGA input (Epson EX90).

I tried HDMI input to a TV, with regular HDMI cable, and that works fine.

The VGA cables seem to be fine, since they still work with my old laptop.

From HDMI to VGA is from digital signals to analog signals therefore you need a proper converter, not a simple cable. A very cheap option (around 10 dollars) is to use HDMI to VGA adapter which is similar to the following one

Thank you - I will order a cable like that right now - I had a simple adapter.
