HP Omen 15-dc1004nu
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I bought an Omen laptop a month ago. It wouldn't detect the integrated GPU. I tried everything without any success. Today I decided to contact customer service with the hopes that I'll get some help regarding this issue. To my dismay, it turns out (according to the fellow from HP support) that the Intel GPU is disabled by the factory and there is no way to enable it.

Now, you may ask "Why would you want to use the Intel GPU when you have a perfectly good Nvidia GPU?".

I usually have dual boot on my laptop. One Windows for gaming and one Linux for everything else. Since the RTX cards are not well supported in Linux (yet), I have to use the integrated card. However, since now the integrated card on my brand new laptop is disabled, I can't install Linux and I'm forced to work on Windows. Not to mention that if I'm using the integrated GPU, the battery won't be drained so quickly when doing mundane tasks.

I don't understand why would you disable a component that is not doing anything bad? I get that it's a gaming laptop, but to take away the choice, of whether or not to use the integrated GPU, from the customer makes no sense.

I'm still hopeful that there is a way to enable the Intel Graphics UHD 630 GPU. Otherwise the nearly 2000 Euro that I paid for this machine were definitely not worth it.

Hey there! @Maddest_Hatta

I have checked the specifications of the PC and the PC is shipped with Intel UHD Graphics 630 integrated graphics.

Try updating the BIOS and Intel graphics drivers to the latest version and check if it helps.

Update the BIOS using this link. Click Here

Update the graphics driver using this link. Click Here

Try the steps recommended below and check if it helps.

Setting your preferred graphics processor for all software programs

Optimus technology use software profiles to enable the use of the IGP, GPU, or a Global setting that lets NVIDIA automatically control the type of graphics processor. Use the following steps to add or change a software program profile.
Ensure that your computer is connected to the Internet.
Right-click the Windows desktop background (not the Start screen) and select NVIDIA Control Panel.
From the left menu, select Manage 3D settings, the Global Settings tab, and then select the Preferred Graphics processor.
From the list, select which graphics processor setting you would like to use:
Select Auto-select (recommended) if you want to let NVIDIA automatically manage the power and display settings for individual software titles, based on available profiles (see the Program Settings tab).
Select High-Performance if you want to maximize the visual appearance and speed for all software programs at the cost of using more battery power.
Select Integrated graphics if you want to use the least amount of battery power at the cost of an improved graphics experience.
Click Apply and close the Control Panel window when finished.

Hope this answers your query!

I hope you have a great day! 🙂

Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

Click the “Kudos, Thumbs Up" on the bottom right to say “Thanks” for helping!

Greetings, @A4Apollo

I now realize that I should've mentioned the things I tried to get the integrated GPU on track (my bad).

The BIOS is updated. However, when I started the Intel Graphics driver, it just extracted the archive in my C drive and that was it. I tried manually starting it from the HPSetup.exe but nothing happened.

I checked the Device Manager:

Display Adapters.PNG

The only Display adapter was the NVIDIA one.

In Linux:

As I mentioned before, I usually dual boot my machines. When I did a live start of Linux Mint I got the following message:

ss1.png

I already knew that the RTX 2070 will not work properly since the proprietary drivers are not "perfect" as of yet. However, the integrated card shouldn't pose any problems.

First I checked the system information (with the expectation to see 2 video cards - One Intel and one NVIDIA). Sadly, there was only the NVIDIA card (which was not properly recognized by the system) :

sysinfo.png

Afertwards I checked the full system information file and ran a lshw (list hardware) command in the terminal.

Results from the sys info file:

In both cases the 630 UHD GPU was not mentioned.

I thought that the card might be disabled from the BIOS (I remember that some laptops had that option). But in the BIOS there was no Advanced tab and no option to switch GPUs.

I issued a ticket about my problem and an HP support agent contacted me in the support chat. The agent just said that the integrated card is disabled by the factory and that was it. I gather that maybe the agent had a mix up? In any case, I still am hopeful that there is a solution.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I tried other Linux distributions with either the same results or worse.

Hi! @Maddest_Hatta,

Thanks for having patience and being with us.

I have consulted the engineering team about this and they mentioned there is no integrated graphics available on this product.

The unit is shipped N18E-G2 which is a discrete card and does not have integrated intel 630 graphics.

So you cannot enable integrated graphics on this PC.

Hope this answers your query!

Take Care!

Hello again.

Here is the official page from the manufacturer: i7-8750H

I searched everywhere to find any information on whether or not that specific processor is made without the iGPU. The only information I found was in posts in some forums where other owners of Omen laptops complained that they can't detect their integrated GPU. There is no mention of an Intel i7-8750H processor without an integrated GPU. And even if there was another variant of that processor, nowhere on the Omen 15 info page was stated that the processor is "special". It's incredibly misleading to just say "The Omen 15 has an i7-8750H processor". When the customers search for information regarding the processor, they'll see that it is manufactured with an integrated GPU (just like you thought when you initially checked). And if that's what they're looking for, they will buy the laptop (just like I did).

Hi! @Maddest_Hatta,

Thanks for writing back to us.

I understand your concern. However, As there is a dedicated graphics card installed the integrated graphics have been disabled by HP.

Also, I would inform the team to update the graphics specifications.

Have a blessed day ahead!

Take Care!
