HP ENVY TouchSmart 17-j041nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I had a virus on my machine a few days ago and while my anti-virus caught it, it seemed to replicate itself and showed back up every few hours and was bogging my machine down. So, I decided to just restore the machine back to factory settings and get a fresh start. That of course meant going back to Windows 8, which is what originally came on the computer - and I figured I would just update to Windows 10 and be just fine.

Well, after going through the process and Windows loaded, I had a very strange issue where the screen would have all sorts of rendering issues.

screen.jpg

The screen would only go to this messed up configuration once Windows actually began to load. During the initial start up, with the HP logo - everything is fine. When the laptop is hooked up via HDMI to an external monitor/tv, the display on that device is fine but the laptop screen is still a mess. I figured that there was just an installation mishap, and reinstalled Windows again. Still having the same problems, even after upgrading to Windows 10.

There are a few issues going on. First, uninstalling the Intel HD 4600 driver, then restarting, allows the laptop screen to function properly, as intended. But the graphics are bad - you can tell things aren't sharp. I've tried installing the driver through the device manager, through Intel's website and even through the HP assistant and all cause the same issue. The second that the driver installs, I go back to this triple screen/mirrored image. When I uninstall the driver and revert back to the basic microsoft display driver and restart, the screen works properly - sort of. The HDMI port no longer works, which is a problem, and of course as noted above, things just aren't sharp.

The second issue is, somehow the driver is re-installing itself mid-session. I had been using this laptop for about 45 minutes on the screen without issue, as I looked for solutions around the internet to this problem. As I was typing this post, the screen went to the 3-image/mirrored screen and low-and-behold, the Intel HD Graphics driver is installed once again.

This has been going on for three days now and I have scoured the internet for anything and everything. I don't know what else to do at this point. Does anyone have even the slightest clue as to what a possible solutino could be?

Hello @dougdirt,

Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! The Forums are a great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community!

I came across your post about the display issue, and wanted to help!  I understand that after performing a System Recovery, the notebook is having issues with the Graphics drivers.

Have you tried using the Intel driver, directly from the HP site?  You can find drivers for your product here: Drivers - HP ENVY TouchSmart 17-j041nr Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)

If you are still having trouble, try restoring the BIOS to its default settings.  You can use the document provided here: HP Notebook PCs - Restoring the BIOS

If that does not work, then try either the Microsoft Push-Button Reset, or the System Recovery.  Then try reinstalling Windows 10 using the Media Creation Tool.

During one of my re-installastions from the backup discs I created when I first got the laptop the hard drive partition with the backup installed disappeared (assuming it got formatted with the rest of the drive somehow - despite choosing the factory restore option every time).

So I'm unable to restore from there, but even using the discs created that takes the laptop back to Windows 8, as originally installed, I get the conflict.

I've tried getting the driver directly from HP. I've tried it directly from Intel. I've tried it using the Device Manager to download it from the internet. They all lead to the exact same problem.

I've used the Windows 10 Media Creation tool, several different times. It doesn't fix anything.

The only thing I haven't tried is restoring the Bios, which I can't do as on the page for the software/drivers for this laptop doesn't have the BIOS option.

Hello @dougdirt,

Thank you for the quick reply!

Am I understanding correctly, that you are still having the issue with the display, after performing a System Recovery, to put Windows 8 back on the system?  Try testing the hardware for failure.  Please let me know the results of the test:

Yes I am still having issues with the display after performing several different system recoveries, going back to Windows 8.

The hardware says it's working properly.I ran the diagnostics on the video and it passed for both the video memory and color testing.

When I uninstall the Intel 4600 HD driver and the system reverts back to the generic Windows display driver - the screen works - but I lose out on the HDMI port and Widi - as well as the graphics simply being slow.

Hello @dougdirt,

Thank you for the quick reply!

First, try uninstalling all of the display drivers.  I noticed that for your system, you have access to both Intel and NVIDIA drivers.  The issue may be related to installing the Intel drivers, as the NVIDIA driver should automatically install/update these drivers.  Once you uninstalled all display drivers, restart the notebook.  Then go back to the display drivers, and one by one, right-click and update each driver.  Please let me know the results.

I hope this helps.

That didn't work. Whenever the Intel 4600 HD driver installed, the screen would go back to having the same issue.

Hello @dougdirt,

Is the NVIDIA driver also installed?  Uninstall the Intel driver, and try downloading and installing the NVIDIA driver, from the HP site.  Let me know how it goes.

The screen "works" when the Intel driver is uninstalled - but that means I've got no ability to use the HDMI port or the Widi functions because it's then running off of the generic microsoft video driver. It also causes video to stutter and even web browsing to be jumpy while scrolling up or down the page.

Hello @dougdirt,

I understand that the display works, when the Intel driver is uninstalled, and that you lose some features.  Did you try downloading and installing the NVIDIA driver, from here:
