I'm having some software graphics trouble with my HP envy x360 13 - whenever I connect the laptop to an external display it ends up detecting it very strangely and the picture on the eternal monitor gets messed up (see pics). In this case it has the display detects as very small. The weird thing with this monitor is that it was working fine until 2 weeks ago and now isn't...
I've tried using the Windows display settings to change scaling and resolution etc which hasn't worked. I know it's not a hardware problem because I've connected another laptop to the monitor and it's worked fine. Any tips anyone?

Hi @Oxy212,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
It’s really frustrating when something that was working fine suddenly starts acting up, especially with external displays!
That said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:
- Have you recently installed any Windows updates or graphics driver updates around the time this issue started?
- Are you using the same cable and port on both laptops when connecting to the external monitor, or have you tried different ones with the ENVY x360?
- When connecting, do you notice if the external monitor is detected as a second display, or does it appear duplicated with incorrect resolution?
Let’s work through it together to see if we can fix the display issue on your HP ENVY x360.
Reinstall Graphics Drivers:
- Uninstall your current display drivers by going to Device Manager > Display Adapters, right-click on your graphics card, and choose Uninstall device. Restart your laptop, and Windows should reinstall the correct driver. If not, download the latest driver from the HP website or your GPU manufacturer's website.
Check Display Settings via Intel/NVIDIA Control Panel:
- Open the Intel Graphics Command Center or NVIDIA Control Panel and navigate to the display settings.
- Ensure the correct resolution and scaling are set for your external monitor and not auto-detect settings that could be misreading the monitor’s specs.
Try a Different Output Port or Cable:
- If your laptop has multiple output ports (HDMI, USB-C, etc.), try switching to a different one.
- Also, try using a different cable to rule out any potential connectivity issues caused by wear and tear.
Reset Display Settings:
- Press Windows + P and choose Second screen only. Then go back to Windows Display Settings and reset the scaling and resolution to default for both displays.
- This can sometimes clear up any display settings misconfiguration.
Test in Safe Mode:
- Boot your laptop into Safe Mode and try connecting the external monitor. This will help determine if any background applications or processes are interfering with the display.
Try updating the Bios by selecting your current OS and serial/product number. Click here
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
