Hello,
Recently my laptop display has been having issues displaying. It's clearly on, but it's black. It happened over time, and now it rarely displays.
Extending the monitors works - but the laptop screen remains black usually. One way I got it to display is to change the refresh rate a bunch of times until it starts to display again. But obviously I can only do that when my monitor is extended. I've reinstalled the AMD both AMD's and HP's driver. I need a permanent solution.
Thank you

Hi @cronin2004,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query.
I am sorry to hear that your laptop display is on but only shows a black screen, follow these steps to troubleshoot and potentially fix the issue:
I appreciate you having tried with the external monitor and its working fine.
Reset the Laptop
- Turn off your laptop completely.
- Disconnect any external devices and peripherals connected to the laptop.
- Unplug the power adapter from the laptop.
- Press and hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds to drain any residual power.
- Reconnect the power adapter and turn on the laptop.
Device manager
- Display adapters
- Graphics { go with the very first drivers}
- Right click and click on uninstall
- Don’t check the small box
- Click on uninstall
- Click on finish
- Click on restart.
Recover the BIOS
- While the laptop is off, press and hold the Windows + B keys.
- Continue holding these keys, then press the power button for one second and release them.
- If the BIOS recovery process starts, follow the on-screen instructions to complete it.
Update BIOS with your exact model using the link : https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers
I hope this helps, keep me posted with the results.
Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi Pallipurath,
Thank you for the suggestions, unfortunately I am still having issues.
I did the first 3 steps somewhat separately. Then I tried again, and did all 4 steps as you mentioned.
On my first attempt, I didn't do it exactly in the steps mentioned, but at some point my screen did appear again. But as soon as I put it in sleep mode and woke it up, it went back to not displaying.
On my second attempt - I followed the steps exactly.
I did uninstall the AMD driver, and then had to do it again because it automatically reinstalled it. Once I uninstalled it again, I turned off my computer as I couldn't see the screen (I had it connected to my HDMI NVidia so I could see), and then did the Windows +B to do a BIOS recovery. The screen did show when I did that. But I am skeptical if that did fix anything because I have had my screen show on restart sometimes.
In anycase, when I updated the bio following the link you sent in the very last step, I restarted my laptop, and it once again is black (it's clearly on, but it doesn't display anything).
Any further suggestions are welcomed.
Thank you,
Angel

Hi @cronin2004,
As i understand the laptop display is blank .
Kindly please confirm if your able to connect to an external monitor and check if your able to see the display on the external montot connected.
Also Kindly try to wiggle the laptop screen carefully back and forth and check if there is any display .
Also when unit is powered on due see the HP logo on the laptop screen.

Hello,
I've never had a problem with the external monitors. I have one monitor connected to my HDMI, and the other to a USB-C. My HDMI is connected to my nvidia card, and the USB-C can extend from my AMD card. Either way, I've never had any issues here (and largely why I'm able to even troubleshoot my laptop screen).
Wiggling does nothing. I can see that the light is on, but it's not displaying anything.
As for the HP logo, I see none in any of my screens.
