I have 2 external monitors working at 1920 x 1080. I would like to change at least one of them for a UHD monitor to work at 3840 x 2160. Will the laptop video be able to handle? and if it will, should it be on USB-C or HDMI connection? Will it work with 2 UHD monitors? Thanks in advance. Carlos

@Carluzino, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Your HP ENVY x360 - 15m-dr0012dx can support at least one external 4K (UHD) monitor at 3840 x 2160, but there are a few key considerations regarding connection type, refresh rate, and multi-monitor support.
🔍 Laptop Graphics Capabilities:
The HP ENVY x360 - 15m-dr0012dx typically comes with:
- Intel UHD 620 Graphics integrated into the 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8565U processor.
- Sometimes accompanied by NVIDIA GeForce MX250 (in optional configurations).
Intel UHD 620 supports:
- Up to 3 displays simultaneously (internal + 2 external).
- 4K @ 60Hz via DisplayPort (DP), and 4K @ 30Hz via HDMI 1.4.
So the determining factor is the ports on your laptop:
🔌 Port Analysis:
✅ HDMI Port (most likely HDMI 1.4b):
- Supports 4K @ 30Hz only.
- Suitable for UHD office or productivity use, but not ideal for video editing or gaming due to the lower refresh rate.
✅ USB-C Port:
- This laptop does have a USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 port, but it does not support video output via DisplayPort Alt Mode—meaning it can’t natively drive a monitor via USB-C.
🔹 You can’t use USB-C → DisplayPort/HDMI adapters with this specific model for external displays.
🖥️ Summary of What You Can Do:
1 x 1080p + 1 x 4K (30Hz)✅Use HDMI for the 4K monitor
2 x 4K monitors (simultaneously)🚫Laptop doesn’t support 2 x 4K due to GPU and port limitations
4K monitor at 60Hz🚫 (natively)Only possible via DisplayPort (which this laptop lacks)
USB-C video out🚫USB-C doesn’t support DisplayPort Alt Mode on this model
✅ Recommendation:
- You can replace one 1080p monitor with a 4K monitor, but you’ll be limited to 30Hz over HDMI.
- For general productivity, reading, spreadsheets, or static content, 4K @ 30Hz is usable.
- If you need 60Hz, you would need a DisplayLink-based USB docking station that uses USB 3.1 for display output.
💡 Optional Workaround for Dual 4K:
- Use a DisplayLink USB dock (like the Plugable UD-6950Z or similar):
- Supports dual 4K @ 60Hz via USB-A or USB-C.
- Uses driver-based rendering, not GPU-limited.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
