HP Pavilion Notebook - 15-p134ns (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 11

I have posted this same problem before - around April/May 2025, received many good tips,

but none of them really solved this problem permanently. I have starting a new thread with more

background based on all my activity of the last 2 months on this laptop where the problem recurs.

BACKGROUND of laptop hardware:

My Laptop is HP Omnibook 14", AMD Ryzen AI 9 365 with Radeon 880M.

16 GB memory, 1TB SSD, 2240x1400 resolution, Windows setting to display at 200% scale.

I use a CORDED mouse - no wireless mouse. My SSD disk has 1TB with only 110GB used.

=========================================================================

I mention these hardware characteristics first because my "screen freezing" (caused by mouse) is happening -- not again, because it never really went away.  I followed all the suggestions by expert Max3j -- turn off all save power features of [not just] USB, but all other power saving features. I also turned off hibernate, sleep, etc. in battery to ALL = OFF. 99% of the time, I use my laptop always plugged in to wall outlet, i.e., rarely use it on battery stand alone.

I have patiently waited a good 2 months to see if I can detect any established pattern that leads to the freezing. Now as a plain user with no "Windows 11 internals" knowledge I am 99.9% sure there is a relationship between:

(a) my screen resolution of 2240x1400 (on a 14" screen), but configured to 200% scale because anything else is either too small to read or too big to distort certain apps;

(b) Excel (I run the native version, i.e., non-365 subscription) 2019 Student Home ed.

(c) my USB corded mouse causing screen to freeze -- the only way to "get it back" is to power OFF the laptop, Login again and be faced with a somewhat damaged/incomplete Excel file.

This comes after 2 months of repeated use and reconfirmation: in nearly all cases, when I move the mouse to a more "crowded" area of the screen -- usually the upper left hand corner where File >> Save, Save as, etc. pop up, that is where it fails/freezes 95% of the time. A few times, when I press F2 to change a formula and while changing with a combination of keyboard and mouse movement, it also freezes. But 9 times out of 10, it is in the upper left corner where File >> Save, Print ... etc. pop up next.

I've replaced the mouse with 3 other different brands, to no avail.

I never use the mouse trackpad as I find it as bad as using a TV remote to browse the web.

I admit I have no further "useful" info to share, but it seems this is the first HP laptop that I have that is giving this uniquely annoying problem. Perhaps -- and this is also a first for me, it is the AMD RUZEN, as all my previous 3 laptops were all INTEL i5 or i7.

The clearest "pattern" to me is that this freezing has NEVER HAPPENED in Word (which I use daily), Powerpoint (about once a week on average), or web browsing, or any other of the simple freeware apps such as Eraser, Macrium Reflect, FreeFileSynch, Adobe DC reader, Gadwin Printscreen and Baron Bridge 29 (a paid card game).

I would be grateful for some guidance on where to look next. I've exhausted every possible source of this nagging freezing of the screen. I love this HP laptop for its compactness, but the only problem is this unsolved mouse freezing the screen problem. Please help.  Thanks in advance.

Computer: HP OmniBook Ultra Laptop 14-fd0xxx

Processor: AMD Ryzen AI 9 365 w/ Radeon 880M (2.00 GHz)
Installed RAM: 32.0 GB

Mouse: Razor Orochi v2 (Both Bluetooth and 2.4 Dongle supported)

Resolution: 2240x1400 (125% scale)

I'm running into the same issues. If I just use my trackpad, there is no issue with my computer that I can find. When using my mouse, I can get it to freeze, but its inconsistent. Once it starts, I must hard reboot the laptop to have full use again. I've rarely went more than 10min of my laptop being on before the issues start. I've tried all the steps in the prior posts as well to resolve.

Hi @rtan2010

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

You're dealing with a highly frustrating and elusive freeze issue—especially since it only triggers in Excel within crowded UI areas, like the File menu region on a high‑DPI display.

Given the extensive troubleshooting you've already done, here are some refined and targeted paths to explore:

1. Disable Hardware Graphics Acceleration in Excel

This is a classic fix when Excel exhibits graphical glitches:

Go to File → Options → Advanced → Display

Enable "Disable hardware graphics acceleration" if it's available (Reddit)

Many users have found this resolves freezing or flickering graphics in Excel.

2. Try Disabling Hardware‑Accelerated GPU Scheduling (in Windows)

Some HP/AMD systems are known to benefit from turning this off:

Navigate to Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Change default graphics settings

Toggle Hardware‑accelerated GPU scheduling to Off, then restart (HP Support Community)

3. Turn Off AMD FreeSync and Other Advanced Display Features

Even though you're using your laptop's internal display, AMD driver features like FreeSync or multisync overlays (MPO) can still cause conflicts:

“I had a very similar issue… turning off FreeSync in Adrenalin stopped any freezing.”
“I found a fix… disable MPO (multiplane overlay)… worked like magic.” (Reddit)

In your AMD Adrenalin software, try disabling FreeSync, MPO, and hardware-accelerated features.

4. Roll Back or Update GPU Drivers

Some AMD driver versions—especially around 23.9.2+—are known culprits. Rolling back to a more stable version like 23.9.1 or waiting for later releases (e.g., 23.10.2) has worked for many users:

“All leads to 23.9.2+ GPU drivers… installing 23.10.2 or 23.9.1… fixed the problem.” (Reddit)

Alternatively, if you're on an older version, try updating to the latest stable driver via the AMD website or HP support page.

5. Explore Windows Display Settings

Even without an external monitor, high-DPI scaling issues can cause strange UI behaviors:

Try enabling "Let Windows try to fix apps so they're not blurry" in Settings → System → Display → Advanced scaling settings (TECHCOMMUNITY.MICROSOFT.COM)

This might help with scale‑related rendering anomalies in Excel.

6. Diagnose via Event Viewer & Safe Mode

Check whether there are any errors logged when the freeze happens:

Open Event Viewer (Windows Logs → Application/System) and look for any critical errors around the time of the freeze (Microsoft Q&A, Microsoft Learn)

Then, reboot into Safe Mode and test if Excel still freezes there—if not, this strongly points toward a driver or software conflict.

Let me know how it goes—especially if any of these steps break or fix the pattern!

Hello Haws_Eye,

My sincere thanks for the extensive list of suggestions.

I will most certainly try them one by one carefully and collect all data and report as needed.

Sincerely
