HP Spectre x360 Convertible 13-ap0xxx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My brand new HP spectre pen has had periods where it writes uneven, jittery lines ever since I got it. These periods seem to occur randomly; it has even occured right after I have recharged the pen. The only application I use it for is Clip Studio Paint.

Thanks for your help!

Hi @Stakv

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

To better assist you -

1) Was the HP Pen shipped along with the computer?

2) May I have the exact model name of the computer? Refer to this document for steps to find the product details. Do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc.

While you respond to that, try these steps -

1)In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.

2)Expand the Human Interface Devices heading.

3)The touch screen device is labeled HID-compliant touch screen, or similar. Right-click the touch screen device and select Uninstall.

4)Confirm the uninstallation.

5) Restart the computer to reinstall the touch screen driver.

Also, try updating the computer -

Step 1 Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.

2) Check for updates.

3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Step 2 HP Support Assistant Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open HP Support Assistant.

2) Check for updates.

3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Sorry for late reply!

I have followed the instructions and had to use the pen for a while to see if the problem would occur again. It occured again today, but I have not yet experienced it with the pen fully recharged (I don't know how to see battery status, there are no lamps). What is normal behavior for HP-pens with drained battery and are there any ways to see battery status?

Answers to your questions:

1) The HP pen was shipped along with the computer.

2) If product name is the same as model name it is HP Spectre x360 Convertible 13-ap0xxx (but I do believe I attached it to my post). My product number is 5EN80EA#UUW.

Download and install the driver and firmware for the pen.

I installed the driver and the firmware, and the pen seemed to work fine for a while. Now it's back to drawing jittery lines even after I just recharged it. I keep noticing that when the pen draws jittery lines, the eraser is allways much worse, constantly gliding slowly across the canvas without me moving the pen. Hopefully this information makes it easier to find the cause of this behavior.

I would also like to add that after the installation, it has occured three times that the computer is unable to exit standby mode, making me have to turn the computer off with the power button. The third time this happened, the fan made an awful lot of noise.

I'd suggest try re-installing the operating system. Please back-up the data and try these steps -

1) Shutdown the computer.

2) Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.

3) Press F11 once for System Recovery.

4) Choose the Keyboard Layout.

5) Click on Troubleshoot.

6) Go to Recovery Manager and click on System Recovery.

Note : Back-up all your data as System Recovery will delete everything that you had saved or installed on the computer.

Let me know.

Will do!

I started the re-installation and the deletion of all my apps and files seems to be finished (a loading bar filled up and the computer turned off). While restarting the screen showed a message with a percentage that went all the way up to 25 or so. Afterwards the screen turned black and has been so for about an hour. I get no response by pressing the buttons and the fan is making a lot of noise. This has happened several times before and then I have just turned the computer off by holding the power button. I am afraid to do so now, because I don't know if the computer is in a vulnerable state with it's 25 % installed OS. What should I do?

Try these steps -

1) Shutdown the computer.
2) Unplug all the Adapter and peripherals connected.
3) Press and hold down the power button for 15 to 20 seconds.
4) Plug-in the Adapter.
5) Try to turn on the computer.

Let me know.

I successfully re-installed the OS, but I have not tested the pen yet. I will see if the pen works in a couple of days.
