Main problem: the number keypad (on the right) sometimes fails to operate, so I press the Num Lock key which sometimes overcomes the problem (I'd prefer the number keypad to remain operational permanently if possible).
However, today I had to press the Num Lock key several times before the keypad began to function.
It would also help if the Num Lock key had an illuminating lamp to indicate it is selected, but that's a design shortcoming.
Secondly, the keyboard illuminates whenever a key (or the touchpad) is pressed, but does not remain illuminated. I should prefer this to remain lit permanently, or at least to be switchable, but I believe that this is another design shortcoming.
Any help to overcome either of these problems (if any are possible) would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi@JBR10,
Welcome to the HP Support Community! I'd like to help!
I see you are experiencing Num lock key and keyboard light issues with the HP Pavilion Gaming 17-Cd1000 Laptop PC.
I have a few recommendations
- Update your Notebook computer to the latest BIOS from HP.COM.
- Make sure the Windows and HP support assistant updates are up to date.
- It runs in the system tray. Click the app's icon and from the menu, select one of the sub-options under Num Lock. If you want to set Num Lock to always remain On, select the 'Always On' option. This will set the Num Lock key's state to On permanently.
- In most cases, you will have a “Fn” and “NumLk” key that can be used to toggle this setting on or off. Hold the “Fn” key, then press “NumLk” to toggle the numeric keypad on or off.
If the backlight stays on/off for only a few seconds, the backlight timeout setting might need configuring in the BIOS.
Restart the notebook, and then immediately press the F10 repeatedly until the BIOS opens.
When the BIOS opens, use the arrow keys to navigate to the Advanced tab.
Navigate to Built-in Device Options, and then press Enter.
In the Built-in Device Options, select Backlit keyboard timeout.
Press the spacebar to open the keyboard backlight settings, and then select the timeout setting.
NOTE: If you select Never, the backlight remains on which could quickly drain the notebook battery power.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thank you for your help.
I could find nothing under 'Num Lock' or 'Num Lock Always On' in HP Support Assistant. I would prefer this to be switched to always on as I use that key and the number keys for nothing else.
I can, of course, switch Num Lock on/off using Fn and Num Lock, though for some reason it sometimes turns itself off unexpectedly.
Unfortunately, having followed your instructions and arrived at the BIOS settings as above, I could find no 'Advanced' tab anywhere and consequently was unable to find any mention of:
- Built in device options
- Backlit keyboard timeout
I hope you may be able to offer some additional suggestions. Thank you.

Thank you for your help and the link you supplied.
Unfortunately, the backlight symbol does not appear on any function keys, or anywhere else, I'm afraid.
I also attempted to turn on/off the backlight using each of the function keys along with the fn key, all to no avail I'm afraid.
Perhaps there is some setting that I could try elsewhere?
