OMEN 17.3 inch Gaming Laptop PC 17-ck0000 (3V6M2AV)

I’ve had an HP Omen 17” Gaming Laptop since April 2022 and almost from the get go I’ve had issues with the touchpad where after a random period of use the touchpad will become erratic, button presses stop working etc.

Disable/enable of the touchpad might fix it for anywhere between 30 seconds and a few minutes before it starts again.

Drivers have been checked and uninstalled/reinstalled to no avail. Mouse and bios settings and power settings checked to no avail.

All Windows and BIOS and driver updates are up to date. I’ve resorted to using an external USB mouse but I’d prefer to not always have to use one to workaround a defective (and expensive) product.

I’ve now found several online sources where people identified it as a static electricity buildup issue and have modified their kit (voiding their warranty in the process) to run a grounding wire between the touchpad and either a grounding screw or the SSD and this has completely resolved it.

Some have also taken to wrapping the ribbon cable that connects the touchpad to the main board in foil and then plastic wrap to shield it from static/RF and not introduce a short.

Meanwhile HP continue to ignore it and make suggestions like reinstalling drivers and messing with mouse settings which make no difference.

And they continue to use this defective design in new (and expensive) devices.

Now I *could* send it back under warranty and have no use of it for weeks - but do I think they will actually fix it? I have my doubts…

So, what do you have to say about selling equipment unfit for the intended purpose HP?

I’m sure this would breach the Consumer Rights Act 2015…

Hi,

Thanks for responding 🙂

If I were to call support, what will actually be done?

I don’t really want to send it for repair under warranty unless HP can confirm this is a known hardware issue and they have a hardware fix for it.

Or if you would replace the entire laptop under warranty if you have newer models which don’t have the defective design?

Hi grahamgold, I recently bought the omen 17 and I see that it is not just a problem with my laptop, did you manage to solve the problem or does it still persist? If so, what is the best recommendation you would give me so that even if this problem is not so serious, I also saw the aluminum thing but I was afraid that it could make the computer worse in general.
