Have a nice basic HP laptop 15-bs158cl which is not backlit. I've had non-backlit keyboards in the past and there was an ability to turn on the light at the top of the display (often used for the camera) and it lit the keyboard pretty well. Is there an ability to do that here, or am I stuck having to provide external light in all cases? I tried camera app, but it provided a dim light focused straight out (to what the camera was seeing). Hoping that there is some way to turn on a better light.

I have not come across an overhead light of the type you describe for years - it used to be on some IBM (and possibly some Lenovo) ThinkPads. Backlit keyboards have really taken over now, not least as they are more energy efficient.
One option is to replace the keyboard you have with the backlit keyboard, but that is likely rather expensive. The other option would be a USB gooseneck light.

Welcome to the HP Forums!
Thank you for posting your query on this forum, it's a great place to find answers.
I checked the specifications of your computer and there is no light beside the webcam. There is a LED light indicator when the webcam is in use however that will not serve as a light.
While I was going through the specifications of your computer I see that you can install a backlit keyboard on your computer.
Please refer to the below service guide (Page 86) for more information.

Thanks for that info. Seems pretty complex and expensive to replace the keyboard (I had to get inside my old HP Envy 17 to clear the fan ... and that was quite an experience). Good to know I'm not missing any easy solution.

Well, I think I'll stick either with making sure I have a light (so not working in bed when wife is sleeping) ... or go with the gooseneck light. I actually have one somewhere around here ... just need to find it. Thanks
PS. Yes, in the past it was on a Lenovo Thinkpad
