I have a HP Laptop (2022). It has 1 HDMI port, 2 USB ports, and one USB-C Port. I have an HP Hub. I am trying to hook up the S3 dual monitors for laptops. I can get one screen to work, but not the other. How can I get both screens to work?

Hi @pmont5100
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thanks for describing the setup—you’re so close to a great dual-monitor experience, and I’m here to help tie it all together! 😊 Let’s figure out whether your laptop’s USB-C port supports dual video output, as that’s the key to getting both screens lit up.
Could you share the following details to help narrow down compatibility?
📋 Info That Will Help Me Check Compatibility
- Exact model name or number of your laptop (e.g., “HP 15s-eqxxxx” or “HP Pavilion 15-egxxxxx”). You’ll often find this on a label on the bottom of the laptop or in System Information (Win + Pause/Break > look for “System SKU”).
- Full name or model of the HP Hub you’re using—some support dual monitors through DisplayLink, while others rely on pass-through.
- How the monitors are connected:
- Are both using HDMI?
- Are either connected via DisplayPort, USB-C, or a mix?
- Which ports are being used on the laptop currently (HDMI directly, USB-C via hub, etc.)
- Is the USB-C port marked with a thunderbolt icon (⚡) or labeled as supporting DisplayPort?
Once I have that info, I’ll check if your laptop’s USB-C port supports multiple external displays, and guide you step by step to make the dual-screen setup work flawlessly. Let’s crack this together and make it shine! 💻🖥️🖥️
Note: Do not share any of your personal information in public, such as serial number, phone number, email ID, etc.
Take care, and have an amazing day!

The hub is an HP Universal USB-C Multiport Hub

I have tried both ways. Hooking up via HDMI, one using the HDMI on the laptop, and one using the HDMI on the Hub, and I have tried the USB-C, and cannot get them both to work. The USB C is labeled with a thunderbolt on the computer, as well as on the hub. I can get the monitor to work that is plugged into to the HDMI on the laptop, but not the USB-C. Although the mouse, CAC Reader all work using the hub, the monitors will not work using the hub.
Your help is most gratefully appreciated!

Hi @pmont5100,
Thanks for sharing the details, that helps a lot. Based on the specs you provided, your laptop’s Intel UHD Graphics only supports one external display through HDMI or USB-C, not two simultaneously, unless the second display is handled by a dock that uses its own graphics processing (DisplayLink).
Here’s why you’re seeing the issue:
HDMI on laptop → Works fine for one monitor.
USB-C on laptop → Even though it’s marked with Thunderbolt, this specific model only supports a single video output at a time through the integrated graphics. Connecting a second monitor directly via USB-C or through a basic USB-C hub won’t give you an additional independent display, it will either mirror the first one or not detect it at all.
The HP Universal USB-C Multiport Hub you’re using does not have built-in DisplayLink graphics, so it relies entirely on your laptop’s built-in GPU limits.
Your options to get dual monitors working:
Use a DisplayLink dock or adapter – These docks contain their own graphics chip and can output to multiple independent monitors via USB. Examples: HP USB-C/A Universal Dock G2, Plugable USB-C DisplayLink docks, or similar.
Use an HDMI + DisplayLink USB adapter – Keep one monitor on HDMI, and connect the second via a USB 3.0 to HDMI or USB-C to HDMI DisplayLink adapter.
Replace the hub with a Thunderbolt dock that supports MST (Multi-Stream Transport) – This works only if the GPU supports it, and on your specific laptop, MST via Thunderbolt for dual external monitors may still be limited. DisplayLink is the safer bet.
Bottom line:
With your current laptop and the basic HP Multiport Hub, you can only get one extended external display at a time. To run two, you’ll need a dock/adapter with DisplayLink technology.
I hope this helps.
