HP Notebook 15
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

In the spring of this year, I sent my laptop in to HP for repair as the screen was black on startup.  I was specifically told not to send the power cord.  I reinstalled all my programs when it returned.

The problem persisted and it was recommended to do a system restore.  This did not help, so I contacted HP again with the same problem.  Only now I know that if you set the screen brightness to minimum on battery, it will remain bright when you plug in the power cord.

A tech at HP gave me the solution.  Disable and then Enable the Display Adapter.  Wonderful.  It works.

THE ONLY PROBLEM IS I HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS PROCESS EVERY SINGLE TIME I POWER UP!

I have to power up on battery only, Go through the process AND THEN plug in the power cord to keep the screen lit.

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Although I did not understand the sentence, "Select it to high performance,"  I soldiered on and the problem appears to be solved.  I powered up with the power cord attached.  The screen came up with reasonable brightness.  The setting is at maximum, so I will count my blessings.  You are one of them.  Thank you.

Hi! @Mareelle, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand that you have brightness issue on your laptop.

Try few steps recommended below.

Go to Control Panel, open Power Options, click on Change Plan Settings next to your selected power plan. Select it to high performance.

Go to Start Menu > Search and type "Device Manager" and then launch the Device Manager app
Scroll down to the Display Adapters entry in the device list and expand the option. Right-click on the installed display drivers, and choose Update Driver Software from the context menu.
In the ensuing interface menu, choose Browse my computer for driver software.
Then choose the option "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer"
In the next screen, select Microsoft Basic Display Adapter from the list under Show compatible hardware section. Then hit Next to continue.
Windows should now install the selected driver and the display driver issue should no longer affect your screen brightness feature. You should now be able to increase or decrease display brightness without any hassles.

Let me know if this works!

Cheers! 🙂
