Hi, I have a HP Envy x360 with an AMD Ryzen 5 processor. I have connected my Envy to a HP LE1901w monitor, using a USB 3.1 Type-C to VGA adapter cable.
Sometimes the 2nd monitor springs into action and I can use it for hours, however sometimes it does not turn on at all.
I can be using my laptop for a couple of hours and it starts working all of a sudden.
I check on the display settings and it is not there, I press windows + P to extend but nothing happens. I have tried 2 other HP monitors and the same thing happens.
Has anyone got any ideas, thanks

Welcome to HP support community.
Update Bios, Chipset and graphics card driver using HP Support assistant.
Use HP Support Assistant to automatically install computer updates, such as updated drivers, system updates, and useful utilities.
Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.
You can refer this HP document for more assistance:- Click here

Do you have this issue with the second monitor from day one?
Have you tried using a different USB Type-C to VGA Adapter? Have you tried the Monitor with other computers or Notebooks without using the USB to VGA Adapter?

Hi KrazyToad, yes I have tried a different cable and a different notebook. I have even removed another usb connection I had in the same side and moved it to the other side?
Yes I have had this problem since the beginning. I was using the 2nd screen all day yesterday with no issues, but this morning its not coming on. I suspect that in a couple of hours it will just start working. This is the 3rd screen I have tried

I suggest you download and run the AMD Auto Detect Tool and it will automatically search for the latest Graphics driver for your Notebook
Please follow the instructions in this Link: https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/gpu-131
If the issue persists I suggest you attempt a Reset. You can refer to this Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04742289
