I turned it back on and for about 6 minutes it worked perfectly. Then the screen flashed a few times and blinked out. When I try to reboot, the screen stays black but the facial recognition lights come on so I am hoping that only the video card is busted. Could that be right? Could it be totally destroyed?
I am overseas right now for 2 weeks- I assume my only option is to wait until I get home and take it to a service provider?

It not only could be but almost certainly is destroyed. There is no separate video card its all part of the motherboard and the beer did a number on it. Once the liquid was spilled the only way to have saved it was to turn it off and completely disassemble it and dry and clean all parts with alcohol. Beer and milk and soda pop are the worst liquids to spill on electronics. Sorry. I won't bother to ask if you have accidental damage protection?

Data on the hard drive is almost surely intact but not impossible the beer creeped into the hard drive. If you can lay hands on a screwdriver I would remove the hard drive ASAP and see if it got any of the liquid on it because if its on it then it may also be in it. If you need help let us know. Not sure where overseas is but in most decent sized European and Asian business cities there are computer repair shops.
