Just had my Spectre evaluated (see link for my original post/problem)

The tech pinpointed the problem to a visibly worn out monitor connecting cable which he attributes to the 360 hinge (although I have rarely used the laptop in tablet mode/flipped). Damage to the screen seems permanent however.

Not sure if that's all there is to the story, but it would at least explain why so many people are reporting the problem across different models with the hinge.

I struggle to think that it’s the display cable as moving the hinge back and forth doesn’t seem to change anything. If it was a connection/cable issue you would be able to see it worsen or improve as you moved the hinge back and forth.

My best guess is that after some thermal wear something on the display stops communicating with the video or backlight controller properly. I think a technician/HP would just replace the whole display so I don’t know if you could isolate it to just the cable.

This issue started for me several weeks ago and escalated pretty dramatically over the past week. Then, today, out of nowhere, the issue has completely vanished. Has anyone seen the issue go away on its own, even temporarily? I've seen the issue subside a bit after a shutdown and reboot, but I've never seen the issue subside completely like this.

Edit: Several hours later, the effects are slowly starting to creep back, it appears.

For me I find the brightness affects how bad the ghosting is. On max with an application with a white background it's very bad. If I open an application with a dark background it's nowhere near as visible.

My screen went completely wrong last week. It went grey and I could just about see the desktop. Turning it off an on resolved it but I think it's only a matter of time before it's permanently broken.

@zeeep Due to the current global COVID-19 situation, we're seeing an influx of customers coming in for support and we appreciate your patience.

That said, I suggest you check if the ghosting image retention occurs when you connect the device to an external/alternate monitor, that way we'll be able to identify if this is either an issue with the LCD or the graphics card.
