Hello Community,
I'm recently experiencing problems with the graphics cards (R5 integrated and R7 M440 dedicated) in my HP 17-y048ng Laptop. As I updated Windows 10 to the 1909 Version and my graphics card drivers with it I noticed that the R7 graphics card isn't working properly or not at all. I tried going in the BIOS and using different drivers. But nothing helps. In the BIOS I miss options for switchable graphics. I tried the generic AMD drivers and the HP provided drivers. No success. When I try to play games their performance is going like a roller coaster and is overall far under it's potential. For example when I start the original NFS Most Wanted from 2005 it's working fine at first but then sudden framrate drop, then it's recovering and then the cycle starts again. Same goes for World in Conflict. Everything i tried so far didn't work not even factory reseting and using HP drivers only. At the moment my laptop is factory reseted and updated to Windows 10 Version 1909 and the latest HP graphics driver for AMD Version 22.19.180.513 from 25.09.2017 as shown in the device manager.
By the way neither the Windows performance monitor nor the AMD system monitor are showing any usage of the R7. The AMD system monitor doesn't even show usage of the R5 which I think is weird.

The dedicated/discrete GPU is system managed and cannot be changed or set as default manually, there are a few tweaks that could be made using the steps in this link: click here to explore, that said, if you've confirmed that one of the two GPU's isn't working, you may want to perform a hardware test to identify hardware malfunction and we could work on repairing or replacing the GPU that no longer works:
Install the latest version of the HP Hardware diagnostics (UEFI) on your device using this link: Click here for details
- Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
- Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
- On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.
- Click Extensive Test.
- Click Run once, or Loop until error.
- While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component display on the screen.
- If a component fails a test, write down the failure ID (24-digit code) for when you respond back to us.

I already "feared" that managing the GPUs by myself isn't possible. But I read that it's possible on some platforms so I tried it and failed. I tried the Hardware Diagnostics UEFI even before I did the factory reset. I got no errors. Now that my Windows is back at Version 1909 (latest) and has the GPU driver Version 22.19.180.513 from 2017 (latest I can find provided by HP) installed I tried monitoring it with the AMD system monitor as recommended somewhere. I can't remember where it was recommended. But the system monitor didn't show any R7 GPU usage. And because I wasn't able to use Windows task manager while playing games, cause the game wouldn't run simultaneously, I thought the R7 GPU was broken or the driver didn't work. I wanted to do some proper benchmarking and monitoring so I installed MSI Afterburner and holy **bleep**, I found out the R7 is working! That really surprised me. Maybe I fell a little in to actionism.
I wonder if installing the latest generic driver will get me back into troble? Cause actually I'm not really happy with using an outdated driver.

I am glad to know that you managed to resolve the issue. Please reach out again for any further assistance.
As of now back up your files and create a system restore point: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03327545 and then try to instal the driver.
Whenever the computer suddenly develops a problem, you should first perform a System Restore to try to resolve the issue before performing a complete recovery using HP Recovery Manager.
