Suddenly few weeks ago, the touchpad stopped working on this old laptop.
Device Manager doesn't show my Synaptics pointing device in 'Mouse & Other pointing devices'. I installed device driver as well from HP site but it still didn't work.
Moreover, after installing, it shows "...newer version of device driver is installed. But if you need older version, go to Control panel and remove the device". But I am unable to even see any Synaptics device in Program & Hardware section. So, could someone please help and let me know how I can fix touchpad issue?

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.
- Did this happen after a recent window or software update?
- Have you made any hardware/software changes?
While you respond to that, let's try these steps:
Hard Reset: Follow steps from the link: https://hp.care/2GnkMa8.
BIOS default:
- Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
- Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
- On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
- Press F10 to Save and Exit.
- Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
- Follow the prompts to restart your computer.
Once it's done, perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant:
To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.
- To open HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon
.
- Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
- Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
- Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
- Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
- Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.
If this fails, perform Microsoft system restore from here System Restore returns your computer to the files and settings from the restore point. Your personal files and documents are not affected.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi,
Please see my response below:
- Did this happen after a recent window or software update? Saudat - No! I haven't updated any windows or software before facing this issue. However when I updated it yesterday, it is still not working.
- Have you made any hardware/software changes? Saudat - No changes in hardware or Software either.
Also, please let me know if retoring or even updating Bios, will my personal work vanish or it will not be affected?
I am saying this just because I want ro be sure before trying any alternatives provided by you.
Thanks,
Saudat

@Saudat
To get the answer to this question, I would recommend please back up your files and data before processing further.
Once you have all the files backed up then you can update BIOS and other systems software.
Keep me posted!

Let's try updating system BIOS from here and check.
If this fails you can perform a system factory reset which will put the computer back to its original settings. By this way, we can isolate Hardware or software related issue with the computer. Click here to perform a system recovery.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
