HP Pavilion Laptop PC 15-eg3000 (78G45AV)

Hi - newly delivered laptop - HP Pavilion Laptop 15-eg3xxx - but it seems right-click on touchpad does not work or acts like left-click. Have updated driver - no change. Have re-installed driver - no change. Have switched left and right buttons in touchpad settings. Left-click performs as I'd expect right-click to; right-click performs as I'd expect left-click to.

Have attached blue-tooth mouse - left and right buttons work as expected.

Does this indicate a hardware issue with touchpad? Thank you.

Hi @SPCJ45,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing a frustrating issue with your HP Pavilion Laptop 15's touchpad. Since you've already updated and re-installed the touchpad driver and adjusted the settings without resolving the problem, here are a few additional steps to troubleshoot.

Check Touchpad Settings:

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad. Ensure that the right-click function is enabled. Look for any gestures or advanced settings that might affect the right-click functionality.

BIOS Update:

  • Check if there’s a BIOS update available for your laptop model on the HP support website. Sometimes, touchpad issues can be resolved with a BIOS update.

Reset Touchpad Settings:

  • In the touchpad settings, look for an option to reset to default settings and try that.

External Mouse Behavior:

  • Since your Bluetooth mouse works correctly, it suggests that the issue is specific to the touchpad, rather than a software conflict in Windows.

Device Manager:

  • Open Device Manager and expand the "Mice and other pointing devices" section. Right-click on your touchpad device and select "Uninstall device." Restart your laptop, and Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.

Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Run HP Hardware Diagnostics to check for any hardware issues. You can usually access this by restarting your laptop and pressing the Esc key repeatedly to enter the startup menu, then selecting the diagnostics option.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4,

Thank for a brilliant, comprehensive and excellent comment / solution.

I worked through all your suggestions and my problem is solved, thank you. As you suggested, I had gone through many of the steps you identified before, and, to be honest, I'm not sure which one actually fixed the problem as I went through them all before actually testing the impact on the problematic right-click button on the touchpad!

Towards the end I did follow the trouble-shooting prompts both within Windows and 'outside'. It was the last 'test' to move the coloured box (left = green  / right = red) to the next target box whilst pressing the appropriate touchpad click. It was then I found the right click was responsive!

Overjoyed - I can now get on with the commissioning of the new laptop.

Once again, thank you for your guidance!
