Thanks for your reply, this was caused by the supplied cable. It is only made to connect the USB hub. We tried an official Apple Thunderbolt cable and it worked.

 

Cheaper cables wil probably work too but that's something to try out.

Finally I get the actual answer for this!

 

There is a setting of the HP Z display that enable the type-c input. Unfortunately this setting is set to disable by default for some reason. Simply turn on the performance mode will solve the problem.
