I have a HP 15-da0079nr laptop and there are updated graphics card drivers availible, HP says I'm running the latest drivers and when I went to the intel site I got a message about running custom drivers and updating might cause compatibility issues.

Hi:
HP rarely updates the graphics drivers for consumer notebooks unless there is a bug in the driver listed, or a major operating system change causes none of the drivers to work.
If you want to update your Intel HD 620 graphics adapter to the latest version listed on Intel's site, it is relatively easy to do.
Create a system restore point before installing the driver just in case of the possibility the driver causes issues.
I use this method all the time on various HP desktop and notebook PC's I own and never had an issue.
As a matter of fact, I have this very same driver installed in my HP Stream 11 Pro G4.
So, here goes...download the zip file version of the W10 graphics driver at the link below. 2nd one down on the left.
Version: 26.20.100.6709 (Latest) Date: 4/18/2019
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28731/Intel-Graphics-Windows-10-DCH-Drivers?product=96551
Unzip the file to its driver folder. Do not do anything with the files in the folder.
Go to the device manager. Click to expand the Display Adapters device manager category.
Click on the Intel HD graphics adapter listed there. Click on the Driver tab. Click on Update Driver.
Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, and then at the bottom of that window, select the Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
Click on Have Disk, and browse to the unzipped graphics driver folder>Graphics>iigd_dch (setup information file), click Next, and the driver should install.
It will take some time for the driver to completely install, so be patient.
Then restart the PC.
The one thing I noticed on mine (I had updated it this way to the previous driver), was this version installed automatically when I ran the Intel driver update utility.
So, it is possible that once the Intel driver is installed, the PC will get automatic updates from Intel without the need to manually install the driver (if you install the Intel driver update utility).
