Where is the setting to disable the Elan touchpad

My HP 7200 runs on windows 10 home.  I cannot disable my touch pad and nothing of the information I got from HP or other Internet places could solve the problem. Maybe I must open the laptop and physically disable the touch pad. It is very, very frustrating with a cursor jumping around when you type.

Finally!!  It took several tries to make sure the feature was actually changed in the registry (a few restarts) then had to place the mouse USB in a different slot so the system would re-install it, but then all is well.  Thank you.

I certainly don't understand why this feature wasn't activated originally, but then, what do I know??????

OMG I want to hug you! I have spent the better part of an entire evening trying to get this issue resolved! Reading through exchanges with other HP support technicians walking them through standard troubleshooting steps and seeing the frustration level rise with each message back and forth. I'm sure I've installed close to 6 different driver versions and I can't remember how many reboots trying things to fix this. When I saw the registry key was there, I knew this would do it. Thank you so much for these directions !!! This is a Godsend !! Ever since I bought my new laptop, I have been constantly fighting the zoom features from the mousepad...I had to reset my sizing 30-50 times a day. I have been searching and trying to find the way to disable the mousepad to no avail....UNTIL FINDING THIS POST !!!! So simple and it works....thanks again !!!!!!!!!!!

There is an Elan Touchpad setting app in Start->Programs

Simply tick on the "Disable when external USB device plugin" and you are done

I was quite dissatisfied with the support I received here and was sure there would be a simpler way out 🙂

You are missing the point about disabling the touchpad.  That option is no long available for us thru ANY software except for the registry edit.  I have a brand new i7 win 10 hp latop that uses the Elan touchpad and had to use the registry edit option which is not only awkward but potentially dangerous for the inexperienced.  This option needs to available and easily accessible again.  Make sure you do a reboot after making the registry change and it appears to be the only way (for most of us) to make the Elan touchpad turn off when a usb mouse is plugged in.

i've just (13/01/2020) bought a new HP laptop and the way i resolved this was by clicking start and typing in 'touchpad' and under touchpad settings theres an Elan touchpad option, click that and from there disable touchpad when a usb mouse is connected.

That's strange; I have a brand new core i7 8 gen with a nVIDID GPU HP Pavilion and it has the elan touchpad option in the start menu. Easy and hassle free. I agree, changing the registry is quite painful 🙂

I am running a more traditional win7 type of interface because I just never did like the win10 ugly colored panel and I'm not running a touch screen.  So going to the control panel/devices/elan did not allow me to make any settings changes.  I just got stuck in a loop that pushed me back to properties.  Selecting Settings/devices/touchpad only allowed me to set the sensitivity of the touchpad.  Advanced setting once again sent me to properties with no settings available.  At any rate once I did a search on Elan (Elan touchpad properties came up) a totally different ETD properties dialog came up where I could in fact disable the touchpad.  It's there but not so easy to find if you're used to just looking at properties under control panel and devices.

Basically - open Settings from the Start button, select Devices>Touchpad - turn it off .. that easy !!
