Explain the situation and see what they say. I did and they are fixing my laptop for me. I did not carry mine in a bookbag nor with any textbooks. Mine sat on a desk which is different than your situation but it is still worth try.

I was put into contact with a customer service representative. She was very helpful. I explained the cracks on my screen and she asked that I send photos to her, which I did. A couple of days later she was back in touch, telling me that it was a defect - the hinge was too tight, creating a stress (all three cracks emanated from the same spot on the bottom of the screen). She sent me packaging to send the laptop back to HP for repair.
So far so good, and well handled.

Did your Spectre x360 crack directly on the hole to the right of the camera or did it crackto the right of the hole? Also is your model the 15.6" 4k display? I ask because I have a theory that the issue is due to the hinges on the larger models being too tight/whatever the latching mechanism is (magnets?), combine with the holes next to the camera cause the screens to break. Lastly, what sort of time-frame did/will it take them to get you back your computer?

Yes, it was the hinge. HP is fixing my screen under warranty. Mine started just to the left of the right hinge. I had three screen-wide vertical cracks all emanating from the exact same spot.
and yes, it is the 15"4K screen, which made the crack that much more aggravating. I paid for a super-duper screen, and it cracked within a few months.
Hopefully their fix will solve the issue.

I have the 15 inch 4k screen and from looking at the crack it appears to have started from the hole to the right of the camera. HP told me to bring it to the Geek Squad at Best Buy because they are contracted to do all of the repairs however the Geek Squad said I would have to pay for it and that they do not do repairs for HP. I called my assigned representative back and he is sending me a new laptop. I have to return this one once the new one arrives. As for a time to fix it I was told approximately 10 days but alas Geek Squad refused to fix the screen.
