Victus by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-d0000 (3S9N7AV)

Hello,

I recently purchased an HP Victus 16-d0038nl (product code 6W1F9EA), which is advertised as having a 144 Hz FHD panel (BOE08F6). However, in Windows, the internal display seems limited to 60 Hz.

I’ve tried several things, including:Updating Intel and NVIDIA drivers (using HP’s recommended versions)Using Custom Resolution Utility (CRU), which only allowed 144 Hz interlaced, not progressing Checking NVIDIA Control Panel, which doesn’t show display options for the internal screen

From what I can tell, the internal display is routed through the Intel GPU, which may be limiting the refresh rate. I want to confirm whether this model is supposed to support 144 Hz on the internal panel, or if this is a limitation of the hybrid graphics setup.

Could you please clarify:

  1. Can the internal display actually run at 144 Hz progressive, or is it limited to 60 Hz?

  2. Is there any BIOS update or option (MUX/discrete GPU mode) that would allow full 144 Hz?

  3. If the internal display is limited, how should this be understood in relation to the advertised 144 Hz spec?

Thank you very much for your time and help!

Hi @BOE08F6,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand your HP Victus 16 laptop is showing only 60 Hz on the internal display, even though it is advertised as a 144 Hz panel. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check Display Settings in Windows

Right-click the desktop → Display settings → Advanced display settings.

Ensure the refresh rate dropdown is available for the internal display. If only 60 Hz appears, note that for the next steps.

Verify Graphics Drivers

Confirm both Intel integrated and NVIDIA discrete GPU drivers are up to date using HP’s official versions.

Restart the laptop after updating drivers to ensure settings take effect.

NVIDIA Control Panel Settings

Open NVIDIA Control Panel → Display → Change resolution.

Check if the internal panel shows options for higher refresh rates. If it doesn’t, this is likely due to the internal display being routed through the Intel GPU.

Check BIOS Settings

Restart and enter BIOS (usually F10 during startup).

Look for settings like “Hybrid Graphics” or “MUX Switch.” If available, enabling discrete GPU mode may allow higher refresh rates.

Save changes and reboot.

Custom Resolution Utility (CRU)

If using CRU, note that some panels only support 144 Hz interlaced through the Intel path. Progressive 144 Hz may not be achievable without full discrete GPU control.

External Display Test

Connect an external monitor capable of 144 Hz to the NVIDIA GPU.

This helps confirm that the NVIDIA GPU can output 144 Hz, isolating the internal display limitation.

Understand Display Specification

Some laptops advertise 144 Hz panels but achieve this only in certain configurations (discrete GPU mode or external displays).

The internal panel may be limited to 60 Hz progressive when using hybrid graphics, which is not uncommon.

BIOS Updates

Check HP Support Assistant for the latest BIOS updates.

Sometimes, updates improve display handling or add MUX switch options for full refresh rate support.

If Still Limited to 60 Hz

If the above steps do not unlock 144 Hz progressive, the internal panel is likely hardware-limited by the hybrid graphics routing.

You can still use high refresh rates on external monitors through the NVIDIA GPU.a

I hope this helps.
