hello community, my computer works just fine except for the screen wich stays black. if i look diagonally i can see super vaguely that the screen is on (the visible things are those that are white such as the time on the login screen or the hp logo when it turns on) but there's not enough light i guess? i am now using it with a second screen connected through hdmi.

Hi @my_kk,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your laptop!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Power Cycle the Laptop:

  • Turn off your laptop completely.
  • Disconnect all external devices.
  • Remove the power adapter and the battery (if it's removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then try to turn it on.

Adjust Display Brightness:

  • Sometimes, display brightness settings can be inadvertently set to the lowest level. Check to ensure the brightness settings are adjusted correctly.
  • Use the Fn + F3 or F10 keys (brightness adjustment keys might vary) to increase the brightness.

Connect External Monitor:

  • Since you're already using an external monitor, this helps confirm that the laptop itself is functional.
  • Go to display settings (Win + P) and select Duplicate or Extend to ensure the laptop screen is recognized by the system.

Enter BIOS/UEFI:

  • Try entering BIOS or UEFI settings to check if the display functions normally.
  • Restart the laptop and repeatedly press the F10 key (or Esc) to enter BIOS setup. If the BIOS screen appears clearly, the issue might be with the operating system settings or drivers.

Update Graphics Drivers:

  • Update your graphics drivers via Device Manager.
  • Right-click on the Start menu, select Device Manager.
  • Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics driver, and choose Update driver.

Check Backlight Settings:

  • It's possible that the screen's backlight settings need adjusting or there might be a hardware issue with the display connector.
  • If you are comfortable, gently open the laptop casing according to its manual and check if the screen connectors are firmly attached.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Resetting the laptop to factory settings can sometimes resolve display issues.
  • Ensure you back up all important files before performing a reset.

I hope this helps.

I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" Your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster! 👍

Thank you so much!

I did the first thing in the list, pressing the power button for 20 sec, and when i turned the computer on the screen turned on and it did automatically a BIOS update and a firmware update and now the screen works just fine.

Thank you again for your help and your work 🙂

hello, i don't know if you'll see this post again; i have the same problem again but this time power cycling the laptop as per instructions hasn't worked. also when checking through "hp hardware diagnostics" it says the firmware is updated.

i have also tried to check the bios settings by turning it on and pressing f10, and i can vaguely see on the screen that i have accessed the settings (there's some clearer zones/ different shades/some writing etc) but it's still super dark and not readable nor usable

@my_kk, I see you were interacting with @Kuroi_Kenshi however, he's away for now and I'd love to help you out!

Thanks for getting back to us—and I’m really sorry to hear the issue has returned.

Since the power cycle and firmware update didn’t help this time, and you’re seeing a faint image on the screen, it likely points to a backlight issue rather than a software problem. The fact that BIOS is barely visible also suggests the LCD panel is working, but the backlight might not be.

Here are your next steps:

Shine a flashlight at an angle on the screen while in BIOS—if you can clearly see the content, the backlight or its power supply may have failed.

Connect to an external monitor again to confirm everything else still functions as expected (which it sounds like it does).

Please don’t open the laptop yourself unless you're trained—backlight repairs can be delicate.

Did we resolve the issue? If yes, Please consider marking this post as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" to give us a helpful vote - your feedback keeps us going!
