EliteBook x360 1030 G4
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have without success opened a ticket with HP support and it has not been replied to in almost 2 days.  Very distressed on the level of support for Enterprise customers.

Meanwhile, I have no issues with similar EliteBook G2's or G3's using SCCM/PXE boot scenario and Win 10 OSD.  The G4 simply no longer connects to the network using either a USB-C adapter or Thunderbolt dock connector after the OS setup step in my TS, so it also then fails to join the domain, and in the case of SCCM OSD then hangs at that point and goes no further.  I did not - as I read in previous posts - disconnect the Thunderbolt cable and reset, as we do not have this issue with G2/G3.  So, what's missing?  Do we not have the correct network driver loaded even after downloading an almost 2 gb driver pack from HP??  I have checked F/W, settings, etc, and no joy.

I'm encountering the same issue.  The OSD Task Sequence start fine from PXE, but after applying drivers and restarting into the OS the USB NIC is no longer recognized.  As you mention unplugging\plugging in the USB-C\NIC adapter it is automatically recognized and the image continues.  This is not even a reasonable workaround because you would have to do this at the correct time during the TS in order for the adapter to be recognized again and pull an IP.  I haven't been able to test further, but I question whether the USB-C NIC would be persistent after additional reboots as well.

I have 'temporarily' fixed this issue by applying an "Auto Apply" step in my TS and allowing it to discover ANY drivers from my entire SCCM driver catalogue but this defeats the purpose of having specific packages per model and managing that way, especially with updating the OS which requires newer versions.  Not 'manageable'.  That is a word I seem to be using more and more after 23 years of practicing this profession.  Not a happy camper.  My ticket with HP is still not replied to either.

That also does not solve why I am still experiencing issues with computers now not seeing task sequences because pass-through MAC is 'intermittent' or not working even though we have configured the F/W correctly.

Breakthrough! So since it sounded like the device wasn't initializing after applying the OS, Drivers, and restarted I went ahead and updated the BIOS.  There were A LOT of fixes included in the latest BIOS that was just release 1/22/2020, so it looked promising that this may be something that was addressed even though it wasn't explicitly mentioned.  This appears to have resolved the issue as my test machine is maintaining an IP and the TS is continuing.  I'd recommend manually updating the BIOS before starting the image.  Since my test machine had no bootable OS I had to reinstall Win10 from disk to update the BIOS then run the TS from PXE.

This issue (network connectivity via USB-C) will also put a stop to the Intune OOBE autoenrollment process.  Update the BIOS software and everything works great.

I have updated the bios to 01.04.02, however I am still experiencing the issue. I have also Updated and used a different driver pack. Can you please confirm what the error message was? Mine mentions an error with the winload.efi file error code 0x00000e. I am stumped as we have also successfully built HP Elite Dragonfly's with the same WIM File and TS.

Any help is appreciated.

FOLKS - interesting news, as I have been fighting this debacle for some months, no help from HP BTW.

It appears in my case, anyway - which is this x360 1030 G4, that HP in its infinite wisdom did not include the Realtek USB FE Family Controller driver in ANY of its many methods of downloading drivers.

I had downloaded using the HP MIK tool (integrated into SCCM and nothing but trouble), the HP Support site for the model page, the HP "driver matrix" page (which is really the FTP to download the Service Pak for 99900 for this model, and the latter stating clearly that it does not 'contain all drivers' for your image.

LENOVO - great product, business first attitude, and gives you ALL your SCCM drivers in one place.  Never had this problem.

I had to get the latest download from the vendor (Realtek) directly, and finally it's working.
