HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14-ba1xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have recently bought a brand new HP Pavilion x360 and I am needing to reset my router every time I want to connect to the network. It seemed to work fine when I was using it for a couple of days at my parents house, and it works fine after resetting the router at home, however if it left for any length of time in sleep mode or shut down it will not reconnect to my network. I can see all the networks in the area but when I try to connect it will work for literally 10 seconds and then drop again until I reset the router. I have tried updating the network driver, rolling the driver back, uninstalling and reinstalling, nothing works. I have changed the setting so that it does not turn off the adapter in sleep mode, still no difference. There seems to be a lot of others on the forums having similar issues, dating as far back as 2009 at least, and I can't find a solution in any of those threads that seems to work. Seriously, can HP PLEASE fix this issue??

Thank you for posting on HP Forums, MKazi is at your service.

I understand that you have an HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14-ba1xx laptop. I read that the laptop often disconnects from the wireless network and reconnects only after you reset the router. I'll be glad to assist you with this case.

To provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Do other devices (smart phone, computers) remain connected when this HP laptop drops out of the wireless connection? This will help us to check if the issue is with the laptop or the router.
  • Did any software changes or updates happen on your laptop recently?

While you respond to that, I suggest you to go through the steps mentioned in the HP wireless troubleshooter guide. These steps help in fixing wireless connectivity issues.

Secondly, you may run a hardware test on the wireless card. The following steps will help:

  • Shutdown the laptop.
  • Turn on the laptop and immediately press the f2 key repeatedly, about once every second, until the UEFI hardware diagnostics menu opens.

  • On the main menu, click Component Tests.

  • The Component Tests menu displays. Your Component Tests menu might be different, depending on the components installed on your computer.

  • Wireless Module Test - The Wireless Module Test checks your system to make sure the wireless module was properly detected by the BIOS and is enabled for use.

To run the test, click Wireless Module, and then click Run once. The Wireless Module Test takes 30 seconds to complete.

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Let me know how it goes. Good luck! 🙂

Hi there!

Every other device in the house connects fine, including phone, tablet and other laptops. It is only my HP that is disconnecting. I have not changed any software on the laptop, but as I say the laptop is brand new, I only bought it on Friday so it could be an issue with the pre-installed software.

I have been through the troubleshooting guide and the only thing that makes a difference is resetting the router, which appears to only be a temporary fix. All hardware and component tests seemed to indicate that everything is working correctly, but I will try rerunning it a few times throughout the day to see if it is dropping in and out.

Thank you for replying with the results.

You may also try to perform these following steps. These steps help in fixing various wireless connectivity issues:
NOTE: Please skip any steps that are already attempted.

A second option, is to try these steps:
Powercycle the network:
1. Shut down your notebook.
2. Unplug the power to your router.
3. Unplug the power to your modem.
4. Wait at least 45 seconds.
5. Plug in the modem, and wait for it to come back online.
6. Plug in the router, and wait for it to come back online.
7. Turn on your notebook, and test your connection.

Disable the Power Off option for the adapter:
1. Open Device Manager. (Win Key+R > type devmgmt.msc > OK)
2. Expand the Network adapters.
3. Right click on the Ethernet/Wireless Adapter and click Properties.
4. Click the Power Management tab.
5. Remove the check mark beside Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
6. Click OK.
7. Test.

Reset the TCP/IP settings on your PC:
1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.
2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.
3. In the window that opens type "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" without quotes, and press enter.
4. Restart your PC and test.

It may also help to reset the winsock catalogue:
1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.
2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.
3. In the window that opens type "netsh winsock reset" without quotes, and press enter.
4. Restart your PC and test.

Reinstall the network adapter drivers:
1. Download the drivers from here but do not run them yet.
2. Go to your start screen/menu and type Device Manager.
3. Expand Network adapters.
4. Right click on the wireless adapter and choose Uninstall.
5. Run the downloaded drivers from step 1.
6. Restart your PC and test.

Test an ethernet connection:
Self explanatory. Test if the issue persists on a wired connection to rule out the wireless adapter hardware so troubleshooting can be directed towards the right areas.

Test another connection:
Many people rule out their home network as an issue if another device is working on the same network. Networking is not that simple. Each device interacts differently with your router or modem and it is impossible to rule out settings in that device until the notebook has been tested on another network.

If those three steps do not resolve the issue, try this document published by Microsoft for networking issues: Wired and wireless network problems. You can change the operating system with the dropdown in the upper-right corner of the document.

Finally, you may consider to perform a Micorosft Push Button Reset if the issue persists

Keep me posted. Cheers! 🙂

TCP/IP, winsock reset and driver reinstall all made no difference. Already got the power off option disabled, double and triple checked after plying with the drivers as well.

It does appear to work better on other networks, seemed to be fine at my parents. Again, other devices are working fine on my home wifi, it just appears to be a problem between my laptop and my home wifi. I'm a bit limited in what I can do with the router though, as it's my flatmates 😞

Thank you for your reply.

You could contact the ISP (if possible) and check if the laptop is on the same channel as the router for a seamless connection.

Keep me posted. 🙂

Finally managed to get it working. Had to roll back to the earliest driver available on the laptop and so far it's been working ok!

I also tried installing the intel driver but for some reason it claimed that there was no intel adapter found despite the fact that it is clearly an intel adapter in the laptop!

I uninstalled McAfee after ttrying all the steps provided below and that worked. It seem as McAfee had a Network security that will timeout like every 10 minute or so. Hope this helps. I had retured the laptop thinking it was a defect but the problem proceeded. I had a new Router installed after but that was because i had renew my internet provider contract(had nothing to do with the wifi issue though)  It is working perfect, just downloaded a different virus protection app

Uninstalling McAfee worked for me (after testing a few hours). Thanks AlexRedpoint

UPDATE: The problem wasnt McAfee as i am still ones again expericancing issues with the wifi dropping on only this laptop. everything else is staying connected. I tried everything on the forum and none of it was successful. I even returned the laptop in exchange for a new one again and still nothing. I am extremely disappointed as HP has yet even recalled this issue.
