HI @jevaughni,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you’re experiencing poor Wi-Fi signal on your HP 15-dy5073dx laptop, there are several troubleshooting steps you can take to try to resolve the issue before deciding to purchase an external Wi-Fi adapter. Here’s a systematic approach to addressing Wi-Fi connectivity problems:

1. Check Wi-Fi Settings and Connectivity:

  • Press the Wi-Fi button on your keyboard (if available) or check if Wi-Fi is turned on in the Windows settings.
  • Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi and ensure that Wi-Fi is turned on.
  • Ensure that you are connected to the correct network and that the network signal strength is adequate.

2. Update or Reinstall Wi-Fi Drivers

  • Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  • Expand the Network adapters section.
  • Right-click on your Wi-Fi adapter and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
  • In Device Manager, right-click on your Wi-Fi adapter and select Uninstall device.
  • Restart your laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall the drivers.

3. Check Router Settings and Placement

  • Ensure your router is placed centrally and away from obstructions.
  • Avoid placing the router near large metal objects or electronic devices that may cause interference.
  • Check your router’s settings to ensure it’s broadcasting on the correct frequency (2.4 GHz and/or 5 GHz).
  • Log into your router’s web interface and make sure it is set to use channels that are less crowded (you can use tools like Wi-Fi Analyzer to find less crowded channels).

4. Adjust Power Settings

  • Go to Device Manager > Network adapters > right-click on your Wi-Fi adapter and select Properties.
  • Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options and ensure your power plan is set to Balanced or High performance. Check Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings and ensure that wireless adapter settings are set to Maximum performance.

5. Run Network Troubleshooter

  • Windows Network Troubleshooter:
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.Select Internet Connections and run the troubleshooter.

6. Check for Interference

  • Other Devices:
    • Check if other devices (phones, microwaves, etc.) are causing interference with the Wi-Fi signal.
    • Test the Wi-Fi signal in different locations to identify any potential sources of interference.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
