I have been having wi-fi problems on and off for some months now. I have had the machine for 8 years. The wi-fi card is a Ralink RT5390R 802.11 b/g/n. I would like to replace it.

Hi:

You should be able to upgrade it to this model...

Broadcom BCM943228HMB 802.11abgn 2×2 Wi-Fi Adapter, Broadcom Bluetooth 4.0 Adapter
HP part # 730668-001

You should be able to find the card on eBay.  Search by the HP part number not the model of the wifi card.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=730668-001&_sacat=0&_sop=15

Before installing the Broadcom card, uninstall the Ralink wifi and bluetooth devices in the device manager, also check the uninstall driver box,  and if there is any Ralink bluetooth software in the Windows control panel>programs, uninstall that too.

Shut down, unplug the PC, remove the battery and install the Broadcom card.
