HP Pavillion Laptop 15-cw0xxx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After the laptop is in sleep or possibly hibernate for some time once woken up the wireless network adaptor is no longer present - examining the windows device manager confirms that the "Realtek RTL8821CE 802.11ac PCIe Adapter" is no longer present.

The only way to get it back is to hard reboot the laptop by holding down the power button for several seconds and restarting it - at that time windows sees the adapter, its reinstalled and I can connect again.

I've checked and updated the bios, and all drivers using the HP Support Assistant and I have tried changing the power saving settings on the adaptor "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" to checked and unchecked but it doesn't make any difference

The even log does contain some error messages like the following

Device PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_C821&SUBSYS_831A103C&REV_00\4&368e024c&0&000E had a problem starting.

Driver Name: oem34.inf

Class Guid: {4d36e972-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

Service: RTWlanE

Lower Filters:

Upper Filters: vwifibus

Problem: 0x15

Problem Status: 0x0

Any ideas how this can be resolved before I return the laptop?

Which version of Windows 10 is installed?  I mean the actual version, not Home or Pro.

My HP product loan  Spectre x360-15t-ch0xx notebook has version 1803 installed.

Read through the following Microsoft community thread which  appears to be about the same issue that you are having. It may be worth trying.

Its 1803 - and I'd not seen that post - have changed the setting and I'll see if that helps - thanks!

sadly the suggestion above about app access to radios has not resolved the issue - still no wifi adapter after sleep/hibernate

I have the exact same problem on my Lenovo Y7000 which uses the same Realtek wireless card. Could you fix this?

Windows 10 later versions do appear to have problems with the Realtek adapter that is installed.

The same Realtek adapter is known to have problems in Ubuntu as well

I would tend to replace the wifi adapter with an Intel version.

Any of the following adapters are supported by the notebook's antenna configuration and BIOS.

The Intel WLAN driver supplied by the HP suport portal suports the adapters as well.

Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165"
"Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 3168"
"Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265"
"Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260"
"Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265"
"Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 9260"
"Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 9461"
"Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 9560"

@Milka23

This isn't Lenovo support, although a resolution of the original thread author's wifi adapter issue will likely apply to your issue.

I had an issue with the Realtek adaptor in Ubuntu 18.04, which turned out to be about permissions rather than drivers. Once the permissions were established (which, If memory serves, was a bios level access lock) The adaptor was easily recognised in Ubuntu.

This problem howevere, is quite peculiar IMHO. I've had wifi issues with my previous HP probook (which incidnetly used an intel adaptor) but it was in form of dropping the connection and sorts, not acting like the adaptor is physicallly disconnected from the machine.

For now I'm trying to turn off the radio privacy setting and waiting to see if it happens again.

If I go the adaptor change route (which doesn't sit well with me, considering this is a brand new laptop) I'll try to get an adaptor that also works with a Hackintosh setup. I know it doesn't like Realtek cards but i'm not sure about intel..

If I did a search of the forum, I  suspect that the greatest number of wifi issues probably come from notebook with Realtek adapters.

I have not noted as many issues with Intel adapters. The Intel adapters tend to be quite stable.

Ofcourse you're right. I meant intel wifi compatibility for Hackintosh, which is a niche scenario. Thanks all the same
