I have two laptops: a very old one, with Ubuntu16.04, which works and a new one, also with Ubuntu, on which I am having the issues. I am doing the posts on the old one.
It i taking me some time to do the updates on the new machine as I have to download voa the old and transfer stuff to the new via usb. Tedious. I am also going to try Ubuntuu 18.04LTS on the new machine, whcih will have the very latest kernal et al and see if that makes a difference.

Hi
You dont have ethernet capability?
I am logged into Lubuntu, and as root / superuser I type.....
LBB@LaptopLub:~$ lspci
01:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8723BE PCIe Wireless Network Adapter
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101/2/6E PCI Express Fast/Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 07)
03:00.0 Unassigned class [ff00]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTS5229 PCI Express Card Reader (rev 01)
and got 24 lines of info, the last 3 being most relevant.
