90% of the time my laptop no longer connects to a WiFi network automatically when waking up or starting, despite this setting being checked. Sometimes (rarely) it does, but I think frequency of these successes have been getting fewer and farther between. This operated normally for some time - until the laptop was out of warranty. 😞 Pretty soon I will have to connect "manually" always.  No updates are available for my system, and HP Support Assistant finds nothing wrong with the adapter.

I have 4 laptops, 3 tablets, and 2 phones in my household, and none of them exhibit the same problem. While it is not crippling, it is very frustrating.

@Vladwiel

Thank you for choosing the HP Support Forums, a community energized by solutions, as we are eager to help resolve your concerns,

I am Riddle_Decipher and I'm at your service (Like a Genie, however, without magic powers) 😉

Have you run the windows troubleshooter to identify/resolve this issue?

If not, please do and if yes, yet the issue persists, please try the below steps:

  1. Left click or tap on the “Start” button.
  2. In the Start window, you need to write the following: “services.msc” without the quotes.
  3. When the search is finished, left click or tap on the “services.msc” icon that pops up.
  4. Now you have a “Services” window in front of the screen.
  5. Look on the right side panel in this window for “WLAN Autoconfig”
  6. Right-click or hold tap on the “WLAN Autoconfig” feature.
  7. Left click or tap on the “Properties” feature for the “WLAN Autoconfig” option.
  8. Left click or tap on the “General” tab situated in the upper side of the “Properties” window.
  9. On the right from the “Startup type”, you will need to left click on the drop-down menu and select “Automatic” feature.
  10. Left click or tap on the “Start” button in this window.
  11. Left click or tap on the “Apply” button.
  12. Left click or tap on the “OK” button.
  13. Close all the windows you opened so far and reboot your Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 device.
  14. Check to see if you have your wireless up and running again.

If the issue persists, try the below steps as well:

  1. Press and hold the “Windows” button and the “X” button.
  2. Left click or tap on the “Command Prompt (admin)” icon from the menu.
  3. In the command prompt window, you will need to write the following: “sfc /scannow” without the quotes.
  4. Press the “Enter” button on the keyboard.
  5. Let the system file checker finish the process.
  6. After it finished close the “Command Prompt” window.
  7. Reboot your Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 system.
  8. Check to see if you still have this issue.

And ensure all windows updates are installed.

Keep me posted, as I (Or a trusted colleague) shall follow-up on this case to ensure the concern has been addressed,

And your device is up and running again, only in case you don't get back to us, first!

That said, If the information I've provided was helpful, give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

That'll help us, and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

Thank you for your ideas.

I did run the Troubleshooter, but it found no problems with WiFi.

For your first suggestion, the Automatic option is already checked for Startup.

For the second suggestion, I ran the scannow and it came back with this:

Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at
windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline
repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.

However, when I looked at the log file, I did not find any errors or indications of problems.

@Vladwiel

Thank you for replying with this detailed response,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

Here's what I recommend we do next:

Create a new user account and check if that works, if it doesn't, please reinstall the wireless adapter using the device manager.

If the issue persists, please run a hardware test on the wireless card using this link: Click here

Keep us posted,

(We shall troubleshoot as a team, fight till the end and emerge - "victorious")

If you would like to thank us for our efforts to help you,

Feel free to give us a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon below,

Followed by clicking on the "Accept as solution" button.

Have a great day!
