I have exactly the same issue. The laptop was getting flaky so I reinstalled everything - back to factory setttings. Updated everything but found that the wifi connection was not very unstable. Basically if I am within 3 feet of the router I get a faint wifi connection. Same with my phone and hotspot devices - never more than a minimal connection which drops of quickly. I have done all the diagnostics possible - including using HP assist to test the network connection. It comes up with one of 2 results - there are no issues or we cannot connect to the wifi please ensure your router is on.

Hi @DdraigGoch,
Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I understand you are having issues with the Wireless not working on your HP notebook. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.
To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:
Could you provide me with the exact model of the PC? Use this link to find it: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03754824 (Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).
Have you recently made any changes on the PC before the issue started?
Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall the wireless drivers?
Does a wired Ethernet connection work?
In the meantime, let's try these steps here:
Let's start off by uninstalling the Wireless drivers from Device manager:
Right-Click on start button> click device manager> Network adapters>then select the wireless drivers and right-click on it and uninstall the Wifi drivers.
Then restart the computer and check if you are able to go online.
Please check with a hardwired Ethernet cable and update the bios and Wi-Fi drivers from this link: and select the country then enter the product# of the computer and follow the on-screen instructions to update the bios and Wi-Fi drivers.
Run a test on the Network card from F2 (Please capture the failure ID for further assistance).
Here's a related HP Forums post that seems to have helped others: Click here
I have a few steps to resolve the issue:
The best way to do that is using the HP Guided Troubleshooter:
Click here to access it (simply select your description of the issue from the bottom of the screen to gain access to the next set of steps that should resolve your concern).
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!
Eagerly waiting for your response!
I hope you have a good day ahead,
And Feel free to ask your queries as this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help.
Regards,

Hi
If you have more than 1 device with a problem, the common item seems to be the router.
So if the Channel is busy or Swamped then changing Channel may solve all 3 issues.
"Basically if I am within 3 feet of the router I get a faint wifi connection. "
So can you access the router? Can you try a different channel?

I suggest you use the Ethernet and download the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...
HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook
-
Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
-
Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
-
Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
-
Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
-
Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.
Also ensure Windows is up to date.
Select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available
Try connecting to wireless now
Keep me posted how it goes
Thank you and have a wonderful day 😊
