Hi:
Two questions for you...
1. Is your ASUS router and your other router both wireless AC?
2. What model wifi adapter does your notebook come with?
If you don't know, go to the device manager, click to expand the Network Adapters device manager category and there you will find the name and model number of the wireless network adapter.

1. yes both are ACs
2. Realtek RTL8822BE 802.11ac PCle adapter
3. Asus Router RT AC88 - unable to see 5ghz, but can see & connect 2.4
4. old Dlink AC router - can see & connect both 2.4 & 5.0
Mobiles, tablets have no problem with Asus 5 ghz
weird... hope there is an answer, thanks

Very weird indeed.
Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you.
Something that Asus router doesn't like about the Realtek wifi card.
I once had a realtek USB dual band card, and it wouldn't see the 5.0 GHz band, but I didn't have a second router to test it with.
On a hunch, I updated the driver, and that got it to work on both bands.
However, no doubt the wifi card you have must have the latest driver.
This would be the newest one I know of for W10...check to make sure this is the one you have now.

You're very welcome.
Check to see if there is a firmware update for your model router, if you have not done so already.
If the card sees both the 2.4 and 5.0 Ghz bands elsewhere, the problem is most likely with your specific router.
Maybe you want to take your notebook out to some places that have free wifi and see what happens, to have a better idea who the culprit is...the wifi card or the router.
