Thanks for the very detailed response. I've spent too much time on the computer addressing this issue, so need to take a day off to spend time with wife and friends. I'll follow your advice soon and let you know what comes of it

Well, to my great surprise my computer is working properly again. I can't pinpoint what solved the problem, as I followed your instructions a few times to no avail, deleted the wifi adapter and restarted the computer several times. Then, after adding Bitdefender and deleting the Norton360 application, things were working again. No idea which action changed things, but thanks to you for your helpful insights
