My wifi disconnects frequently, including when running on battery but also occasionally when on mains power.

Well, to my great surprise my computer is working properly again. I can't pinpoint what solved the problem, as I followed your instructions a few times to no avail, deleted the wifi adapter and restarted the computer several times. Then, after adding Bitdefender and deleting the Norton360 application, things were working again. No idea which action changed things, but thanks to you for your helpful insights

What model wifi adapter does your PC have?

realtec rtl8852be

The only suggestion I can offer would be to update the Realtek RTL8852BE Wi-Fi driver to the latest version HP currently has for that model:

Realtek RTL8xxx Wireless LAN Drivers

Version 6001.15.158.601

sp161604.exe

Thats my current driver, which still offers no relief.

So no joy.

Can someone else help??

I installed Previous version 6001.15.152.0. It is in hp package 1.0.0.248.Rev.S. Running since June 3 with no drops.

Where can i find that driver? searching on "hp package 1.0.0.248.Rev.S" doesn't help

You go to the HP Software and Drivers page (under the Support Resources menu), select laptop, enter your laptop model, Windows release and version. Then expand Driver-Network. Click the + on Realtek RTL8xxx Wireless LAN Drivers. Scroll down and click the + on Previous version. You should see 1.0.0.248 Rev.S .  If your laptop model does not list that package then you might consider installing a different previous version.

Thanks. Found the support page. ...248 was not listed, but ...247 was, so I elected to download and install that. Following install wifi driver was listed and unchanged: 6001.15.158.601. Restarting the computer did not generate any change, so I assume the install of the older driver package was unsuccessful. Any ideas?

It sounds like the install did not happen. These are the steps that you should take.

1. First expand that software package on the hp support page and identify the drive for your adapter version so you know what to look for.

2. Download the package. It gets put in your local download folder as a spxxxxxx.exe file.

3. Double click the file to unwind it (a zip file). The extracted files get put in C:\SWsetup\SPxxxxxxx

4. Click Next. A dialog box tells you your "HP Softpaq Wrapper Completed. Click Finish.

5. Then you go to Device Manager -- Network adapters -- Realtek RTL 8852be  -- right click -- select Properties -- update driver.

6. Choose: Browse my computer. Select: Let me pick from the list. Then select the driver and Next. It gets installed.

7. I don't think it is required but you can restart your computer.

If you completed steps 1-4, you could probably just start with step 5 assuming the package is already on your computer. The reason I installed the 6001.15.152.0 driver was that in the release notes it said the purpose was to fix "wifi disconnects". None of the past two drivers or the current driver (156) for my Realtek 8852be-vs adapter were working. I had chronic wifi drops beginning around April 1, 2025. As a last resort I decided to try a previous driver. Drivers that get installed for my adapter have all been listed for the 8852be adapter so I guess I assumed that same driver would be available for your laptop. You might have to read through those hp software packages to find a driver that was released to actually fix this ridiculous problem.
