Sorry but I am Way from home, burglar alert, and maybe tomorrow UK time I can think of something useful.

Hi

First off the MAC address 00-15-00 comes back as Interl Corporate, that matches.

Next it should hava Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200 , and it does.

SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 is 1 of 5 listed OS's, and we may come back to this.

And you used this driver Windows 8.1*:  PROSet version = 18.40.4  Driver version = 15.17.0.1

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27025/Wireless-Intel-PROSet-Wireless-Software-and-Drivers-...

Try https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility

to hope it can give a clue.

This is for the Quick Launch Buttons, and maybe completely useless....

File name: sp49104.exe (26.1 MB)

Wireless button Turns the wireless feature on or off, but does not establish a wireless connection.

BIOS   ESC, F10 apparently  http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03382696  page  111

Select To do this
Built-In Device Options
Enable/disable the wireless button state (enabled by default).
● Enable/disable embedded WLAN device radio (select  models only; enabled by default).
● Enable/disable the embedded Bluetooth device radio (enabled by default).
● Enable/disable the Network Interface Controller (NIC) (enabled by default).
● Enable/disable LAN/WLAN switching (disabled by default).
● Set the wake on LAN state. Options include the following:
Disabled:   Boot to Network:  Follow Boot Order

So the WIFI may be controlled via the BIOS and the BUTTON.
Enabled by Default suggests it may not be that way now.

If in doubt please ask.

No luck.

DIsabled the wireless button state and WLAN devices in BIOS.  Re-booted and re-enabled both.  Installed the driver you recommended, wifi device still remains switched off.  Cannot enable it with the light/button or through the control panel or settings.

Replacing the device itself under the keyboard last week did no good.  Are we looking at some other hardware problem?  Should I be looking at the mainboard or the switch itself?

Hi

While not wanting to waste your time, and I think it may well be the main board, I wonder if we took MS out of the equation, leaving only the HP main board as one of the original suspects.

This needs a little bit if hardware, a 4Gb USB stick, a lot of download capacity and a dusting of magic powder.

The SuSE Enterprise OS was mentioned, and it still has relevance, but for simplicity I now use Lubuntu.

You download the .iso which is 925 Mb (a little under a Gb) and extract it onto a DVD/USB using LiLi which is Mb.

It is just a really wild idea, that takes time but may well confirm the cause.

If in doubt please ask.

This is driving me up the wall!

Now this morning my ethernet port has gone dead and the ethernet controller has disappeared out of the device manager!

Hi

Sorry but I think at this point you need professional hands on help.

Well, that last one was on me.  In the BIOS I turned off the network card by accident.  Got it back on and running now, but still no wifi.

Hi

So if you can turn the card ON/OFF in the BIOS then it must exist, and be known to Windows OS.

So at least part of this was/is valid

Built-In Device Options
Enable/disable the wireless button state (enabled by default).
● Enable/disable embedded WLAN device radio (select  models only; enabled by default).

You could now try toggling the Wireless Button.

So now a Lo-Cost-No-Cost option.

So I go back to running Lubuntu from a 4gb stick.

The SuSE Enterprise OS was mentioned, and it still has relevance, but for simplicity I now use Lubuntu.

You download the .iso which is 925 Mb (a little under a Gb) and extract it onto a DVD/USB using LiLi which is 6Mb.

Make a DVD/USB and ESC and F9 boot from it, give it a few minutes.

It is an alien desktop.  Mine just worked out of the box.

If in doubt please ask.

here is the solution for the wifi not working after upgrading to win 10..... i've searched for days for a solution and i also buy another pcie wifi module that didn't solve my problem so i had continue my research and i finally found the solution. At first the solution was looking awkward and so easy to do that i didn't even tried it and ordered a new module win 10 compatible but still no luck so for all of you that think there is no way to make it work don't be stupid as i had been and try it . This will not cost you any add'l bucks just remove your old module and put a scoth tape on the pin 20 of your module and voila! wifi's back and fast and no more orange light...blue light is back. the story behind all this is in windows 7 the wifi switch is activated via proprietary software hp in my case that was designed for win 7 maximum no more upgrade available above this version and after upgrading to win 10 the switch is turned off and no possible way to turn it on unless you dowgrade to win 7 which is a nonsense so in putting a tape on the pin 20 of the module you bypass the switch and telling the module that he's on and always stay on. I include a picture of the module with an arrow showing you where to put the tape . there is a youtube link that show how to mask the pin. for pcie card it is pin 20 but for other form factor it could be something else like the one in the video it up to you to find the pin that work for you but the secret is to bypass the switch so look at the attach picture and hope you will succeed as i am! good luck ... my computer= hp probook 6550b with n6200 ultimate centrino wifi card.
