HP Pavilion Notebook 15-ab289s
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, can anyone help please..... ?

I've bought an HP Pavilion Notebook 15-ab289s due to it having an 802.11ac network card in it. However, I only seem to connect to my 5G wifi on 802.11n. I can get ac on my phone using the 5G wifi no problem.

I've tried several drivers for the Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 card but none make a difference.

This is the current driver info which shows 802.11ac is supported:

    Driver                    : Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165
    Vendor                    : Intel Corporation
    Provider                  : Intel
    Date                      : 23/03/2015
    Version                   : 17.16.0.4
    INF file                  : C:\WINDOWS\INF\oem61.inf
    Files                     : 2 total
                                C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\Netwbw02.sys
                                C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\Netwfw02.dat
    Type                      : Native Wi-Fi Driver
    Radio types supported     : 802.11b 802.11g 802.11n 802.11a 802.11ac

This is the latest driver that shows 300 Mbps Recieve/Tranmit rates in the interface details, anything newer only gives 150 Mbps:

    Radio type             : 802.11n
    Authentication         : WPA2-Personal
    Cipher                 : CCMP
    Connection mode        : Auto Connect
    Channel                : 36
    Receive rate (Mbps)    : 300
    Transmit rate (Mbps)   : 300
    Signal                 : 95%

I'm thinking it's driver related but no idea why I'm not getting 802.11ac. The advanced options in the card properties seem ok.

Where did you find it was the AC wifi card? What is your Product Number?

Hi Tardis, thanķ for your reply. Unfortunately I've already tried that driver, and also some newer ones I found on Intel's website (18.30 was the latest one I found). I've also done the 'reset laptop' option and still the same.

Hi PeerOne, thanks for the reply. I'm guessing its the card driver as the card itself is working ok. My product number is P5P69EA#ABU.

I was getting ac before the laptop ugraded itself to Windows 10 v1511. Unfortunately, resetting my laptop only goes back to this version.

Hi @ldac,

Thanks for getting back to me.

as per the spec for the network card "The Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160 802.11ac, dual band, 1x1, Wi-Fi + Bluetooth* adapter lets you move at the speed of life with faster speeds (up to 433 Mbps)".

Hope this helps.

Hi Tardis40,

Not really very helpful no. I'll try quoting a bit of the card spec to my laptop but I don't hold out much hope of it resolving my issue.
